Hi banchan,

Oh, my goodness!!! What a question. Since you've asked a question
that shows you have a considerable degree of intelligence, you most
certainly realize that no research is going to return results of a
definitive nature.

Every man, woman, and child on this earth has the potential to be
interesting to another person. Each and every person has experiences
that differ from, and are interesting to, others.

Let's check out historical figures. How about George Washington
Carver? He was born as a slave -- he worked his butt off to get an
education. His daily life consisted of drudgery, but when we look back
on his life we realize what an extraordinary individual he was. I am
fairly confident that he didn't get up each morning reminding himself
that he must do something significant to make his mark on posterity.

Nobody can MAKE themselves be more interesting. Now, you might say,
"Oh sure, you're black 'cuz look at the example you picked." I'm not
black; I'm Caucasian, but this man interests me immensely.

People don't need to be 'famous' to interest me. They don't need to be
eccentrics.

If you feel insignificant, you need to reach out to those who ARE
interested, and those who aren't have some sort of deficiency, at
least as far as I'm concerned.

Sadly to say, I don't know my neighbours up the hill, but I wonder WHY
they have enough faith in human nature to sell their farm produce from
a wagon with a cash box by the side of the road. Now that's
interesting!

I have a friend who's a tenured professor -- his occupation isn't as
interesting to me as the fact that he can't change a flat tire.

My advice is to NEVER try to be more than you are. Be yourself, never
apologize for it, and keep a journal. Somebody, somewhere, is going to
be interested.

Regards.

The best thing I can suggest if you want to be an interesting person
is that you read, read, read. Fiction. Nonfiction. Mysteries. Sci-Fi.
Poetry. Humor. Classics. Pulp. The best way to seem taller is to stand
on a stack of books. ;-)

I would like to add that is also important to be a good listener and
to ask lots of "interesting" questions.

Hi banchan,

Here’s what you do. As you socialize with people, over time you
will come to realize that the one thing that people like to do is talk
about their selves! When you look at any busy traffic intersection,
think about how each person going by has a personal agenda that they
are working to achieve. Each one has a little story to tell about
their selves. When you come into contact with someone that you can
interact with, get him or her to reveal his or her story. When you
learn how to ask the questions that get them talking and revealing,
over time they will tend to like you and they won’t even know why.

But wait! That’s not all. Take a look at how you view yourself!
You may be belittling yourself! Be sure to take the smallest thing
that you are and put that on the table of conversation. Don’t ever
think there is anything about you that is frivolous or unimportant.
You may not be an astronaut or an inventor, but you sure could talk
about your adventures on the World Wide Web for example. Speak Up!
Don’t be shy and reclusive. When someone asks, “How are you.” Be
like a rocket ship shooting off to the moon!

All the best,
James

Read "The Comic Toolbox: How to Be Funny Even If You're Not" by John
Vorhaus

You won't need to read the entire book, just read the free PDF excerpt
that Amazon.com allows you to view. The advice given there is not just
about comedy, it answers your question perfectly.

The key to becomming more interesting is to become more INTERESTED. Be
genuinely interested in others, especially their points of view. Doing
this you open yourself up to new experiences. By the way, this cannot
be faked. Pretend to be interested, and you'll be found out. In 1937,
Dale Carnegie wrote "How to Win Friends and Influence People". In it
he discusses this topic at length. This book is as relevant today as
it was over 60 years ago.

I recommend going to Amazon.com or Half.com and searching for cheap
used tapes or cds of the book. It's great to listen to while you're
driving or otherwise commuting, and chock full of important things you
can do to change your life.

good luck!
