Hi there Roberl,

Is this all we have to go on?  I mean are you in a class dealing with
some aspect of colonialism?  Huxley was a great chronicler of British
colonialism in Kenya, so it is my guess that was the country she was
talking about, but in her long writing career, she wrote a great deal
about different countries, including Britain.  Any other clues you
could supply would be great.  (I don't think the Australian reference
in the Comment section below is correct.)

Kenya, the country Elspeth Huxley was referring to in the quote you
gave in your question is Australia.

The quotation comes from a book Huxley wrote about Australia,
" . . . and in Sydney was the sun . . .  From it [the sun] springs the
whole Australian temperament . . . This country is a rim containing

lapped or pounded by oceans."
