kamakazi... Let me respectfully suggest simple earplugs and a LOUD alarm rather than sedatives of any kind. |

Sound proof windows, closed room doors and dark, opaque window coverings also help for a good night's sleep. |

You can buy Nytol online or over the counter http://www.nytol.com/ However, from personal experience, I can say that it will make you feel foul the next morning! |

Hello, Here is a link to the most commonly used sedatives and their side effects: http://www.sdh.sk.ca/rxfiles/acrobat/Cht-psyc-sedatives.pdf Note that all are prescription medications except diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and doxylamine which are available over the counter. Please consult your primary care physician for individual evaluation and management of your condition. I can provide a more detailed discussion of sleep hygeine and sedative use in a seperate question if you wish. Thanks, Kevin, M.D. |

I use 50 mg of generic diphenhydramine for occasional sleeplessness. It is inexpensive and can be bought without a prescription. This is the active ingredient of most OTC sleep aids. The main side effect is a dry mouth. It is not addictive. http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/Drug/Diphenhydramine.htm Drugstore.com has a good price: http://www.drugstore.com/qxp74912_334918_GPF1/rite_aid/sleep_tablets_diphenhydramine_hcl_25_mg.htm |

You can also try the amino-acid tryptophane or kava kava. Both should be avaliable OTC. I have tried some Chinese sleeping pills with positive results; you can get a free sample from http://www.chinese.hk.herbal-medications.com |

I'd second the advice about kava-kava. It's a Hawaiian herb that acts as a muscle relaxant. My SO suffers from occasional insomnia, and that's what I give him, usually with a cup of "Sleepy Time" herbal tea. We hate using drugs or synthetic chemicals of any kind, and this combination has yet to fail. Good luck. |
