Good afternoon!
After striking out at online and at every salon in Toledo, I called
American Crew in Dever, CO and asked for an ingredient list. Melanie
at American Crew flatly refused, explaining that I could only get an
ingredient list by purchasing the product.
Thanks to the time generously given by Nickol at PopeHair, I got one
anyway!

Comparing the American Crew Revitalize Revitalizing Daily Moisture
Shampoo with the other shampoos I've evaluated for you, I find that it
is similar in makeup to the Nexxus Botanoil product. The first four
ingredients are identical in proportion, so the shampoos are similar
in terms of mildness and cleaning effectiveness.
Where they differ is in the inclusion of various oils and herbs - the
Nexxus product focuses on oils to moisturize and soothe, the American
Crew product seems to focus chiefly on herbs known for stimulative
properties - either to stimulate blood flow, which in turn stimulates
hair follicles - or substances said to stimulate actual hair growth.
Both would seem to be beneficial for both hair and scalp, with extra
hair retention and regrowth benefits given by the American Crew
product.
Otherwise, there seems to be very little difference between the
American Crew product and the Nexxus Botanoil product. Both would
appear equally effective for cleansing purposes, and both are equally
mild - or rather, milder than the Clairol and Paul Mitchell products.
If I can be of further assistance, please don't hesitate to ask for
clarification. I'll be glad to help!

Hello again!
Researcher voila-ga pointed out in discussions yesterday that both the
*lauryl sulfates and the *laureth sulfates will provide good
cleansing, but products with *lauryl sulfates are harder (more
damaging) to your hair:
"Lauryl sulfates (sodium lauryl sulfate, triethanolamine lauryl
sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate) are found in most shampoos as the
main surfactant since they work well in both hard and soft water,
produce rich foam, and are easy to remove. This group produces good
cleansing but is hard on the hair.
Laureth sulfates (sodium laureth sulfate, triethanolamine laureth
sulfate, ammonium laureth sulfate) produce rich foam, provide good
cleansing, and leave hair in good condition. They also are a common
main surfactant."

As to the shampoos and their formulations, I think only the scientists
creating the formulas can tell you why they choose *lauryl sulfates
over *laureth sulfates, or vice versa. Each puts together the formula
they think (or their tests show) works well. I suspect it to be
because of cost - *lauryl sulfates are less expensive.
Personally, I try to avoid shampoos with either, as they strip my dye
out! I've found that shampoos without these chemicals do just as well
as shampoos with them.
The two most drying ingredients in the Botanoil product are Sodium
Laureth Sulfate and Cocamidopropyl Betaine - though both are milder
than Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. The moisturizers and oils in the Botanoil
ought to counteract the drying effect of either of those, though!
It's been, as ever, a pleasure to work for you. Please do let us know
if there is anything else we can do for you - we like our regular
customers and are always glad to see them satisfied!
