A dozen people use this computer. I can preserve security on 'Word'
files by requiring a password to open them. How can I do that with
other files and with folders?

Would a free, downloadable utility serve your purposes? If so I'd be
happy to find you a small program that you can install that will do
all of these things.

eerr, its an ordinary PC using windows 98. Is that the OS? If not, how
do I ask my computer what the OS is? Yes, a software prog that would
do the bizz would be fine.

Yes, Windows 98 is the operating system.

Since tutuzdad-ga hadn't gotten back to you for awhile,
I thought I'd provide you with a link to the software
you need.

I tested this program first, to make sure it would work
well for you.

HandyBits.com produces a freeware program called
EasyCrypto Deluxe, version 5.5. It offers 128-bit
encryption of whatever files and/or folders you
select. You can do this by opening the program and
choosing the files and folders to encrypt, or you
can use the handy option available in the drop-down
menu when you right-click on a folder or file in
Windows Explorer, and select 'decrypt' or 'encrypt'.

You can also use the program to build self-extracting
zip files which you can email to others. All they need
is the password you set to view the files.

There are several other features which make the program
very user-friendly.

It is a 1.8Mb program, available for download here:

hi there Sublime1 really sorry for the long delay -things v frantic
here (not re folder coding)
Yes, I had a look at easycrypto and its just the ticket. Many thanks.
My one concern is that handibits might one day not be available to
help when the "key" wont work and my folders remain locked for
eternity! Risk i have to take i suppose. Anyway, thanks a lot for your
efforts. I'm going now to the 'evaluate reply' page to confirm your
10 out of 10. See u perhaps with my next query!

Thanks very much for the rating! I don't think you have to worry
about the key not working, as long as you can remember it!
To that end, you might want to record it somewhere.
