Hi Kedrene,

Not knowing either your general subject area or your location, I am
hampered a bit in my ability to "vette" the suggestions below as to
relevancy to your needs. I hope you will take a look at them and find
something that will work for you.

Intota Expert Knowledge Services
http://www.intota.com/
This is a specialized service for science & engineering, materials
science, industry & technology, and business question answering. You
select an expert and contact him/her directly.

Kasamba
http://www.kasamba.com/
This service has experts in a field whom you contact directly with
your question and a bid price. The expert you contact will, in turn,
write back with a proposal including their price, timeframe, and
probable answer structure etc. Or you can post a question to the
public board.

Keen
http://www.keen.com/
In this service, you bid your question to an expert who then calls you
on the phone. You pay by the minute. The service seems to focus more
on business and social issues (entertainment, "life coaching") than
most I've seen.

LiveAdvice
http://www.liveadvice.com/
Similar to Keen, also with the non-scientific research bent. You can
have anonymous phone calls with this service.

SwapSmarts
http://www.swapsmarts.com/home.asp
This service appears to be very similar to Google Answers (they even
have a comparison chart to us!) but they promise anonymity. I'm not
sure how they enforce it, but it appears to be another post a question
and get bids type of setup.

Allexperts
http://www.allexperts.com/
This service is confidental and uses direct email to experts for your
question (and it's free)

You might also try the "Ask an Expert Sources" from the Community
Learning Network to see if any of their suggestions are relevant to
you. They also have some emails for public library reference desks. I
can tell you as a librarian, it is a point of professional pride that
all questions asked are kept confidential to the point of some
librarians being willing to go to jail rather than turn over
information (yes, it has happened).

I hope you find one of the above services useful! I found them by
looking at the options available in a number of categories at the Open
Directory Project, particularly
http://www.dmoz.org/Reference/Ask_an_Expert/.

Yours,

librariankt

What about your local public library? They have been in the business
of giving answers privately and without charge for quite some time
now.
