What in particular do you want to do with the VCR other than watch
tapes? Record off the TiVo, or record one thing while the TiVo is
recording another?

It would also help if you could list the inputs/outputs on each of the
devices.

The best way to see the back panel input/outputs for the SVR-3000 and
DAV-C990 is to visit crutchfield.com.

My TV is no longer sold, but the rear panel inputs are the similar to
the KV-24FV300 which you can also see on Crutchfield. I do not want
to use Video 2 as it is on the front of the TV. Video 1 in has
s-video so that seems to match with the SVR-3000, Video 3 has
component input which seems like a good match with the DAV-C990

The VCR has cable in and out and Red-White-Yellow Connections (1 set
each for in and out).

I am looking for ease of use with regard to the connections.

I am not clear on what to do with the "Monitor Out" connections on the
back of the SVR-3000.

Goal - best picture/sound/no redundant connections

I will occassionally transfer something from the TIVO to the VCR.

I want to set the system up so the rest of the family will be
comfortble and use the system and not be intimidated.

The Monitor out issue pertains to the DAV-C990, not the SVR-3000.

Hello W1j2m3,
It might be most helpful if you can clearly photograph the connector
sockets of the devices you wish to interconnect, and post the photo
somewhere (just mention the link here) so researchers can see what
kind of connectors you need. Can you do it? This would be a very quick
way to facilitate the researchers in finding a solution to your
problem. Thank you.

Howdy w1j2m3!

I am suggesting you set it up this way; this is a tough
bunch of equipment to set up (as you are aware of ...)
because of the lack of S-Video in the right places.

Cable
 |
Tivo - VCR
 | |
Home Theater
 |
TV

That is, the cable runs to the Tivo.
The Tivo runs to both the VCR and Home Theater
The VCR runs to the Home Theater
The Home Theater runs to your TV

This setup allows for use of the dual tuners of the Tivo
to watch one program while you record a second on the Tivo.

You can transfer something from the Tivo to the VCR
easily as well.

Your family just needs to switch from Video 1 to Video 2
on the Home Theater to switch from the Tivo (acting as
your tuner) to the VCR for watching tapes.

Alternatively (and essentially the same) you can take
the output of the VCR directly to your TV and the family
would just go from Video 1 to Video 3 on the TV to watch
tapes on the VCR.

This is not as "intuitive" as the first setup, so I
would go with the first.

Yes, I know the (preferred) S-Video connects don't get
used at all, but that is the trade between ease of use
and video quality.

The "Monitor Out" connections on the back of the SVR-3000
seem to come into play only if you have a DVD unit.

Hope this helps! denco

Thanks Denco.
If I ever get my receiver back from Sony Service I will tell you it
the set up works.
