Spring Song (Frulinglied) is a painting of a young girl sitting on a
bench looking at a robin in a birch tree. It was painted by the German
artist, Simon Glucklich (spelling variation: Gluecklich). Prints of
Spring Song were very popular in the U.S. in the 1920's.
        . When was this painted?
        . Where is the original?
. Are there any images of the original? Some of the prints
that
were circulated were modifications of the original.
. Biographical information about the artist?
. References to the popularity of the painting?
Thank you,

Hi j_philipp-ga, justaskscott-ga,
Thank you for the links. I am checking them out.
My wife's mother had a print of this in her home. I was able to buy
an old framed copy (circa 1915?) from a source on eBay. Several come
up for sale each month. Some of the prints are variations on the
original. In the original, the young girl is shown with eyes closed
and is supposed to be Glucklich's daughter, who is blind. In the
varients, the eyes have been retouched to be opened. I am interested
in the history of the print and how it spread across the US.

I have found a little biographical information about this artist (date
and place of birth, where he lived) in conjunction with another
painting of his in an online catalog. I have also seen a few
advertisements for prints of this painting, unfortrunately with no
further information about the artist or date of the painting.

I have written to a museum that has at least one work by this artist.
I will let you know if I receive a reply.

Hello Charz,

Simon Glücklich was born in Bielitz in 1863 [1]. He lived in Munich.

I suspect the German title of the painting "Spring Song" to be
"Frühlingslied" ("Frühling" means "spring", and "Lied" means "song").
Other paintings of his include "Das Hauskonzert" (the house concert).
You can see it on this page:

You can also find his work in the Museum Georg Schäfer in Schweinfurt
(Germany).

I've send out an email to this museum and will get back to you here if
anything comes up. I hope this helps!

Hi,
(I am the one who asked the original question.)

I wanted to add that I own a 30" wide 18" high version of "Spring
Song", and believe that this is the way the original print looked. It
shows the bird in the tree farther away from the girl (in better
perswwpective), and there is a whole forest visible behind the bird. I
think that the version commonly seen has been "verticalized" so to
speak---foreshortened to fit in a vertical (e.g. 8X10 or larger)
format. I have never seen one like the one I own, and it is a vintage
print.

Hello again, I(I asked the original question)

I can't belive that the original painting has not been located, nor
additional info about the painting and its artist found. I will remain
hopeful! I Wanted to link seekers to current eBay sale of 'Spring
Song'that is like the one I own (noted in previous email), which I
beleive to be the seldom-seen original version (?), which might
provide leads to the real original. Good luck.
