Dear gaiko,

There are three ways to find the persons you are searching for:

- 1. Using the Nationwide German Telephone Directory -
This phone directory is the official one, provided by the Deutsche
Telekom telephone company. It contains all phone numbers of telephone
subscribers who have agreed to a listing in the phone directories.
There is an English version; also, you can choose to either use a
simple or advanced search. In the advanced search mode, you don't have
to fill all fields. Usually, name, given name and city should lead to
a number of results, usually with street addresses. In case you do not
own a computer keyboard with German special characters (ä, ö, ü, ß),
you can replace them with ae, oe, ue, ss. The database will recognize
and accept that.

- 2. Using the Local Directory -
The Local Directory is also provided by the Deutsche Telekom and works
much like the Nationwide Directory. However, it is based upon local
phone directories and contains some phone numbers not covered by the
nationwide version. Unfortunately, there is no English version, so I
also give you the translations for the most important words necessary
for understanding and using the database:
"Name/Suchwort" - "Name/Search Term"
"Vorname" - "Given Name"
"Straße - Nr." - "Street - House Number"
"PLZ" - "ZIP Code"
"Ort oder Vorwahl" - "Place or Local Code"
"exakt" - "exact" (searches for exact results only)
"ähnlich" - "similar" (searches also for results resembling the search
terms)
"Detailsuche" - "Advanced Search"
"Suchen" - "Search"

- 3. Requesting Address Information from local Authority -
In Germany, inhabitants of any town are required to register with a
public authority at their current place of residence. This office is
known as Einwohnermeldeamt (registration of address office). Upon
request in written form, these offices will provide information on a
specific person's address. Should you not find the addresses you need
though the directories, please let me know the name of the city and I
will search contact information for the registration office for you,
so you can write them and request all information you need (usually,
this service is subject to a small fee; asking for the exact terms of
payment in advance is highly recommended).

Hope this helps!
Best regards,
Scriptor

Thanks for the useful information for Germany.

FYI for Hungary, the directory is http://www.matav.hu
(Be careful, the search is sensitive to accents, of which there are
many in Hungarian)
