Hello jashnimal-ga,

Thank you for your question.

My search returned the following results for Apple’s market share
worldwide and in the U.S.

WinInfo Daily UPDATE, September 20, 2002

“Three recent surveys put Apple's worldwide market share at less than
3 percent, leading analysts to once again ponder the company's fate.
How bad is it? Giga Information Group says that Apple has hit a new
low of just 2.6 percent market share, but RedSheriff says the figure
is 2.2 percent, while OneStat.com says 1.43 percent.”

Apple market share rises slightly by Jim Dalrymple
July 3, 2002

“Market research firm International Data Corp.'s (IDC) latest research
numbers indicate a small increase in Apple's market share in the
United States. For the current quarter (Q1, 2002) IDC shows Apple as
the number six computer maker with a 3.48 percent market share. This
is an increase of 0.4 points over Q4 2001 and a 0.25 point increase
year over year. Worldwide, Apple is in ninth place with a 2.4 percent
market share.

In comparison, computer maker Dell is in first place in U.S. market
share with 26 percent and worldwide with 14.3 percent.”

PCWorld.com: Friday, September 06, 2002

“By referring to the rest of the computer market as the "other 95
percent," Apple implies that its own market share is at 5 percent, a
figure that may not be entirely accurate. According to Gartner
Dataquest, Apple's worldwide market share was 2.5 percent last year,
down from the previous year, and 3.9 percent in the United States
market.

Regardless, Apple says it is hoping only to capture an additional 1 to
2 percent of the market, to reach a 5 or 6 percent share--something
the company thinks this ad campaign can accomplish. "If we increase
our market share by 1 percent or 2 percent, Microsoft won't really
miss that. But to us, that increase is really big," Schiller says.”

“The company held 4.5 percent of the U.S. market in the second quarter
of 2001, for example, and 4.6 percent in the third quarter, according
to IDC.

However, comparing Apple's most recent unit sales and market position
numbers to the same data historically, Apple's market share appears to
be shrinking slowly over time. For example, Apple held about 4.1
percent of the U.S. market in 1997 and 6.7 percent in 1996, according
to Gartner.”

But according to statistics from Gartner/Dataquest, Apple's market
share has been on a steady decline.

“In 1997, Gartner pegged Apple's worldwide market share at 3.2
percent, where it remained through 1998. A slight increase to 3.3
percent in 1999, thanks to the original iMac, was nullified by a
decrease in 2000 to 2.8 percent. Market share decreased again in 2001
to 2.5 percent.

"I don't believe Apple has made progress in corporations, but its
value proposition continues to resonate in consumer, education and
graphics orientated markets." Charles Smulders, vice president of
hardware platforms at Gartner, told NewsFactor.”

Just out of curiosity what do you mean by market share? The number of
computers Apple sells in relation to Dell and other PC manufacturers?
Or do you mean how many households in the US currently have/use a Mac?
 Or something else?
