As an alternative to using a hosting company, you can create your own
ftp server to run on your own system fairly easily. The storage
limits would be set by you, and the only fees you would incur would be
the fees you currently pay to your Internet host provider as well as
any software costs [a broadband/high speed connection is highly
recommended]. With hard drive storage as cheap as it is, you can host
gigabytes of data using this method. I use a free program called
GuildFTPd, available at http://www.guildftpd.com/. Additionally,
there are other shareware, freeware, or relatively very inexpensive
software options out there. Ultimately, setting up your own server is
hands down the cheapest, most flexible, expandable, and controllable
route to take.
