The menus have disappeared from the top of my Internet Explorer
(Win98, IE5)page. There is just a row of icons beginning with back/forward
arrows. How can I restore the menus? |

Try pressing the 'F11' key, and let me know if that helps.

Or right-click on the toolbar (with the icons) and reselect your
address bar. You might want to make sure that you lock the toolbar
from here forward because an inadvertent mouse-click while browsing
can alter your menus.

I have tried the suggestions. Pressing F11 makes no difference. Right
clicking on the toolbar produces no response. Thanks for trying.

gasser-ga,
To summarize some of what my fellow Researchers have suggested, the
F11 key is supposed to toggle between IE5's windowed mode, and it's
full screen mode, while rightclicking on a blank part of the toolbar
is supposed to display a small pop-up menu where you have the option
of selecting or delecting the "menu bar".
Can you please describe in greater detail exactly what happens when
you tried these two suggestions. As well, can you please confirm that
you right-clicked on a blank part (ie. not a button or the address
field) of the toolbar?
Finally, it is possible to use a system policy to restrict access to,
and display of, the IE5 menu bar. Is your computer administered by
someone other than yourself, who may have purposely or inadvertantly
added this restriction?
It is also possible that a maliscious program has altered your
settings. Do you recall what you were doing when this problem first
appeared?
Thanks.

Responding to aht:
when I press F11 or right click on an empty area of the tool bar,
absolutely nothing happens. No one else administers my computer. I
cannot remember what I was doing when the problem started, but I had
shortly before installed a program (rjhExtensions) which has
facilities for locking and shredding files. However, I have not yet
used it.

Sorry, one more clarification. Is IE5 running in full-screen mode (ie.
there is no title bar at the top of the window)?

there is a title bar at the top followed by the row of icons and then
the address bar.
johnny:
thanks for the suggestion, but I do not want to download and install
IE6 just now. I will later if nothing else works.

gasser-ga:
The only ways I am aware of to cause the menu bar to not appear in
IE5, are
1. Deselecting it on the list of Toolbars (right-click on the button
bar, or Alt-V, T), or
2. Adding an undocumented restriction to the Internet Explorer
policies, along with documented restrictions on changing the Toolbars,
or
3. Running IE5 in full-screen, or kiosk, mode, where the menu bar is
hidden by default (but where there is no title bar, either), or
4. Opening a new window using Javascript, with window.menubar.visible
= false, or
5. Your computer is subject to the bug/fix described in MS Knowledge
Base Article 234012,
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;234012
Based on your testing, it appears that neither 1 nor 3 is the culprit.
4 is unlikely, unless your home page is set to a maliscious site. 2 is
also unlikely, but is still possible. However, to check on this, you
will need to use RegEdit to locate and view any IE policy restrictions
that may exist.
That leaves 5. Please note that the fix for 5 is included in the
recommended update for Internet Explorer, which currently means
downloading and installing IE6 (SP1).
For the scope of this question, you are best advised to download and
install IE6 (SP1), to eliminate the possibility of your machine
suffering from the problem described in MS KBA 234012. Sorry if that
isn't the answer you wanted to hear, but it may be the only way to fix
this problem.
Please feel free to ask for clarification. If you are willing to
accept this as the Answer, please let me know.
Thanks!
