Does such a song exist?? Can anybody remember it or is it a figment of
my imagination perhaps?? I think I remember it as a kid but can only
find one reference to anything like it on the net via GOOGLE when I
type in the three following words, namely..... groovy grub worm. That
reference is exactly as appears below as GOOGLE shows it.
............recorded the million selling Classic Rock hit,"Groovy
Grubworm" with ...

Other than that I know nothing but do remember, in my mind at least,
that as a kid this song was one of my favourites as a small child

Dear Researcher,
I do really appreciate very much the time you are
putting into this question assuming you are the one that has been at
it for quite a while now. However i think I should notify you that I
am now thinking that while I am sure the song title is right the group
may not have been the "Groovy Grub Worms". Hope this has not stuffed
up your search routine and methodology.

Hi, John!

I am so glad that you added the clarification statement saying that
the name of the group may not have been "The Groovy Grubworms," since
I could not find any mention of such a group on the Web - and surely
grubworms would get caught in a web if they ventured into one. ;-)

I believe the song you're remembering is "Groovy Grubworm" as
performed by my fellow Oklahomans, Harlow Wilcox & the Oakies
(featuring Johnny Bernard). I remember this song quite vividly, as it
was wildly popular here in Oklahoma.

Here's a little bit of background on the song:

"In 1968, [Bobby] Warren released what would become his record
company's biggest hit record, Harlow Wilcox and the Oakies' 'Groovy
Grubworm.' Wilcox was a boyhood friend of Warren and had served as the
studio's primary guitar player for many of its releases in addition to
writing songs for many Shorebird and Impel artists. 'Groovy Grubworm,'
a happy, up-tempo, guitar instrumental reminiscent of Duane Eddy's
'Rebel Rouser,' originally was released as the B-side to another Impel
record, 'Sad as Lonely.' Disc jockeys at Oklahoma City's KLPR and KEBC
played the B-side instead of the A-side, and 'Groovy Grubworm' took
off... Because of Warren's vigorous promotion, 'Groovy Grubworm' began
receiving enthusiastic airplay on radio stations in Oklahoma City, San
Antonio, Lubbock, and Ft. Worth... 'Groovy Grubworm' spent 19 weeks on
the Cashbox Country Music Charts, with eight weeks in the top ten, and
two weeks at number one. 'Groovy Grubworm' eventually sold over
900,000 records in U.S., an equal number in Europe, and close to
200,000 copies of sheet music."

Here are two sites where you will find a selection of recordings of
"Groovy Grubworm" for sale. (Note that both of these sites enable you
to select a type of currency, and "Australia Dollars" is one of the
options):

Google search strategy:

Google Web Search: "groovy grubworm"

I hope this will enable you to become re-acquainted with this charming
piece of music. If this is not the song you seek, just send me a
request for clarification, and I will gladly resume the quest!

Best wishes,

No Pinkfreud you wont have to go any further as it was definately an
instrumental that I remember and you have highlighted the fact that
it(the tune you refer to) is an instrumental so no doubt that would be
the song. I will venture into the sites you offer but also now that I
know that it exists and because I forget completely what it sounded
like I will ask my 15 year old computer whiz-bang daughter to see if
she can locate it at a point where she can download it legally and
hear it all over again. I was doubtful that it existed initially as
no-one that I know had ever heard of it when I raised it in
conversation and I suspect it was not much of a hit here at all in
Australia.
Whata shame the group that sung it was not called "The Groovy
grubworms" as I am sure you will agree this a wonderful name for a
band. You answered the question correctly and thoroughly so cant
logically be anything but five stars.

I am glad to see that people are still looking for this song. My dad
was Harlow Wilcox, and infortunately he died August 26, 2002. His
group was called, "Harlow Wilcox and the Oakies". Although he did not
want to be solely known for Groovy Grubworm, that is the one song he
was nominated to the Grammy's for. Thanks for remembering!

Thanks for the comment, tatorbug. I am sorry to learn that your
father, Harlow Wilcox, is no longer with us. He certainly earned his
place in musical history! It is odd that artists often don't know what
may bring them lasting fame. Surely it's better to be famous as the
Groovy Grubworm guy than to pass unknown.
