I found a reference to the ship along with a short list of passengers
on a voyage from Bremen to New York in December of 1857. Is this of
interest to you as an answer?

Also, I'm finding that there were actually a number of ships that
sailed under this name at various times. If you tell me more about
what you already KNOW it might aid in the further research if that is
necessary.

Are you absolutely certain about the date October 23, 1857?

Here's what I have found and these are the ONLY references I could
find to ships named "Jason" arriving in New York:

I have a list of all passengers aboard the bark Jason from Bremen to
New York on October 17, 1848.

I have a complete list of all thre passengers arriving on the ship
Jason from Bremen to New York on 7 December 1852.

and finally, I have a list of all the passengers on the SS Jason
arriving in New York from Amsterdam on 1 November 1881.

That's the extent of what I could find. Are you sure none of these
could be the ship you are looking for? If you are conviced that none
of these are the ship you are looking for, can you tell me where you
got the information you do have about the ship "Jason"?

Please understand that I am not trying tp push this passenger list on
you if you do not want it. I am merely trying to help you find an
answer. In the passnger list of the Jason from Bremen to New York,
dated October 17, 1848 is an 18 year old male passenger named "Johann
Michel", who hails from Fischborn. His claims his occupation as
"mason".

One other question. Did you grandfather end up settling in Wisconsin
by chance? It might also be helpful if we knew where you grandfather
lived in Germany (provided you know that of course).

I do not think anything we have seen today so far will help me. They
called it "ISteamer Jason" arrived at New York Oct 23, 1857 from ?
port but Germans to America said th ey were picked up at Gibraltar.
This is all I know. I just wanted the picture to further prove they
came by ship and weren 't swiming

I just noted the fact about all different locations to let you know I
don't know where he was born or what to believe. My Grandfather,
Frank's son, told me he didn't know very much about his Dad because
they didn't get along and my Grandfather left home about 14-16 years
old after his mother had died. I know they lived in LaCrosse, Wis. in
1860, Chippewa Falls, Wis. 1870 and Cedar Falls, Wis. in 1880, and he
spoke German also English. Then my Great Grandmother died and we
don't know what happend to GreatGrandfather after that. Nobody seems
to know.

In 1857, photography was in its infancy so it's hardly likely that any
photographs were taken. It's even more unlikely that any would have
survived but Good Luck, anyway.

Perhaps the information and the publications mentioned on these two
webpages may be helpful:

In your follow-up question you mention that your ancestor went on
board in Gibraltar:

This would be a peculiar place for German immigrants. Why do you
believe that they started their journey from there?

I have wondered w hy they were picked up there and the only answer I
can come up with is that they could get to USA quicker by going down
there to Gibraltar and boarding there because I don't think they have
any work available on such a small island as Gibraltar.

Travelling via Gibraltar wouldn't have been a faster route to reach
the USA, even if your ancestors had lived in Southern Germany.
However, your ancestors may have been shipwrecked and then stranded in
Gibraltar, to be picked up by the ship with which they finally reached
New York.

A ship with immigrants from Bremen to New York would hardly have taken
the route via Gibraltar.

I need something as closed to oct 23 as I can but do the ones in 1857
show the passengers with the name of Francis (Frank) Michel (Mickel)
(Mitchell) ? I have a naturalization paper that says it is Francis
Michel on the exact date of oct. 23. 1857 at new york port. the
manifest number is 00009108. Need copy of manifest too

We knew very little about GreatGrandfather. We did not even know his
name. Just that he settled in Wisconsin but he was a farmer and the
second generation had settled on the name of Mitchell, but mu
grandfather said it was changed from Michel to Mitchell. the 1860
census said he was from Nassua, 1870 he was from Prussia 1880 said
Austria and then in 1920 his son said he was born in Berlin Germany.
See what my problem is. Germans to America said his name was Francis
Mickel, arrived in US on Jason Oct 23, 1957, in new york manifest
#00009108 and that is what his naturalization papers say. I am
trying to get it confirmed. We have never found where or when he is
burried. But it is my family because all the details fit.

Someone coming from Nassau in 1860 could well have been described as
coming from Prussia in 1870, as Nassau was occupied by Prussia in
1866.
