I will be visiting New York City on the 28th of August until the 2nd
of September of this year with my 6 year old and wife. We will be
attending the US Tennis Open Tournement, yet we need to have
suggestions for what else to do while in New York City that can be fun
wholesome family activities. So my question is: Can you please supply
us with atleast 10 suggestions (they should be viable suggestions
e.g., The Lion King is sold out). Thus, we need 10 available
suggestions on what a ethical family can do while in New York City
next week.

Hi! Thanks for the question.

places to visit in New York City and then you could pick from there.

Let us start with kid oriented places. The following link provides
places such as children’s museums, parks, zoos, aquariums, gardens,
theme parks, etc.

Also consider:

The Staten Island Ferry -- a round trip ride is cheap, and offers a
great view of the Harbor (not to mention an interesting cross section
of NYC humankind).

FAO Schwartz up near Central Park, and Warner Bros Studio Store on 5th
Ave and 57th -- your kids will love these, but let them know in
advance if you're just browsing, or if the can actually buy something
-- neither store is what you'd call cheap.

Empire State Building -- still the essential tourist stop.

Bronx Zoo -- a lo-o-o-ng subway ride, but still one of the world's
great zoos.

A stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge, for an unbeatable view of the
Manhattan skyline.

And two things worth checking out in Queens (where I think the Tennis
tournament is still held:

Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge
Cross Bay Blvd., Broad Channel, NY
718-318-4340 / 718-318-4338 - fax
This 9,000 acre preserve is home to more than 325 species of birds.
The diverse habitats include salt marsh, upland fields and woods,
several fresh water ponds, and an open expanse of bay and islands.

Socrates Sculpture Park (a very cool place, if they're exhibiting)
Broadway at Vernon Blvd., Queens, NY
718-956-1819
Twice a year the sculpture garden serves as the backdrop for new and
established sculptors, and offers breathtaking views of the river and
Manhattan skyline anytime.

Enjoy your trip.

I will never forget my first trip to NYC as a youngster. The most
memorable part of the trip was the day that my family spent at the
American Museum of Natural History and the Hayden Planetarium. What a
wonderful combination of entertainment and education that experience
was!

If you want to try for The Lion King, check at the half-price ticket
booth in Times Square. (Tickets are either half or three-quarter
price.)
