I would like to start a small online bookselling business (for
example, through half.com) I would like to
know how to obtain the current bestselling and popular books at
wholesale prices and
where to look for the distributors of these wholesale books.I am open
to publishers overstocks, remainders, dropshippers, and the types of
books sold through bookclubs also. Since I would be
starting very small, I would like to know if there are wholesalers who
handle
smaller orders. Thank you!

Greetings! You are inquiring about an area of retail that can be a
huge moneymaker and one of the best places to purchase overstocks,
remainders and discounted books as a wholesaler is at Rhino, located
at http://www.rhinosales.com/ - you must register as a business with
them as they wholesale to businesses only.

For instance, Rhino offers The Cat in the Hat, a bestseller for
children. Buy 1-2 and the price is $2.91 per book. Buy 3-4 and the
price drops to $2.33 per book. Purchase 5 or more, and receive a
larger discount: $1.75 cost per book.

Banner Books (http://www.banner-books.com/links/wholesalebook.html)
also offers a large wholesale link list, full of many useful links
and, if you want to buy in bulk skids, check out
http://www.booksalefinder.com/jeffsbooks.html

Booksale Finder has a one skid minimum: “Each skid varies as to the
number of books; the typical skid will consist of 750-1,250 books
(average 1,000). Skids also vary widely in total retail value and,
therefore, your cost (approximate cost $1,000 - $2,500 per skid).”

That may be a little high for you at present but it also may be a link
you might decide to utilize in the future.

However, the real money in bookselling is found in selling used books.

On a personal note, I have also sold used books online very
successfully and would like to offer you personal experience from one
of my friends who sells used books on Ebay.

She was shopping in a local thrift store and found a slightly battered
copy (no dust jacket) of a first edition of "Eloise In Paris", a
children’s book. She opened it and saw there was an autograph from
the author. She bought the book for $1.

Then, she did Internet research on the autograph to ascertain its
originality and found it was the author's handwriting. She posted the
book on Ebay, accurately described its condition and, 10 days later,
she sold the book for $650. That’s not a typo: she made $649 dollars
on one sale.

While not every sale will be like hers, most people do not realize the
value of used books. Another local friend bought a 1st edition Hunter
Thompson at a local library sale for $.50 and sold it for $225. And
it even had the library markings all over it.

While selling new books can make you money, selling used books will
make you a great deal more money for less work. Of course, this
requires you educate yourself as to hot authors and subject matter but
the detective work is fun and educational, and you would not believe
the profits that are out there to be made on used books.

The oddest topics are bestsellers in used books and, unless it’s a
first edition popular author, non-fiction far outsells fiction. I
found a flimsy catalog once for church vestments. It was from the
1960’s and showed many pictures for religious vestments and altar
cloths. In fact, it was a catalog to order these items, not a pattern
book or anything. I paid $.25 for it and it sold for $125.

Also, there is a grading system for used books and it’s very important
you list every single flaw in a used book. A good guide “Selling
Books Online - an overview for beginners” can be found at Littera
Scripta (http://www.litterascripta.com/sellers/sell.shtml) and they
also offer a grading system at
http://www.litterascripta.com/sellers/describe.shtml to help you know
how to ascertain the condition of used books.

I hope this information is of assistance in your quest. I think you
are choosing a great area in which to open a business and I wish you
great success. Should you need a clarification, please ask.
