Partially answered my question. I was able to locate 3 articles for
the New York Times which appear to be relevent to my question. The
articles were fairly brief in that one reported his (i.e. Charles
Jenkins) defection, a
 second was confirmation from North Korea that he had defected and the
third was an article in 1982 of another defection of an American
Soldier to North Korea which also referred to Charles Jenkins.

Regarding the NEWSPAPER Archive Search service I also did a search on
this which came up with what looked like some interesting articles
(in total about 3) However when  i attempted to register to the
service it came up with an error message

Good article; came a little late for my purposes but that is the fault
of my crazy boss who -- out of the blue -- wanted the research in 10
minutes at 6:30 this morning, not the reseacher!

Great answers, on a hard to find subject. It's difficult to know where
to start, but these will definetly help further research!!

This researcher is fabulous!  He understood my need for more details
with each preliminary response and had incredible perserverance to
totally answer my question.  I could not have asked for more.

Although all questions could not be answered the researcher found
other valuable information. A great deal of effort was made.
