It's clear to me that googlebrain's answer and clarifications are
strictly correct. However I learned little from him that I did not
already know. The comments from other users were for me far more
illuminating, especially those by blader and ulu.

Given the simplicity of the problem I had hoped to see the correct
line of reasoning without use of trigonometry or calculus or
non-euclidean geometries. It seems however that one of more of these
branches of mathematics are necessary for any complete answer to the
problem.

Now you got me, that is the angle I have been looking for... Maybe
I'll make one myself.. You are right.. it would have to be really high
end components but that is just part of the package.

Thanks for the help. This question is very specific to a particular
field of control engineering, so I didn't know if I would get a
specific answer at general site like this.

This is a great service!  Thank you.  Instant answers from such
intelligent people.  I will definitely use this service again.

This is what I found also.

I did find a free DOS utility as well called filecopy that says it
works on any version of windows, but I get a runtime error when I try
it.

I did not see the message regarding earlier versions of open file
manager, so perhaps that's the answer to try and get hold of an
earlier version to try on Win98.  Did you find anything on this yet?

I guess I have misunderstood the service offered here -- I would have
preferred an answer from someone with some actual expertise on this
subject, rather than someone who just searched the web for related
info.
