Thank you.  The book recommendation is also very helpful.  I

Good information, but before I change the fluid, I still need to find
out which "ATF type" is recommended for an '89 Mercedes 260E.  I still
don't know for sure if it's OK to use or not.  Apparently Chrysler ATF
cannot be substituted w/ Mobil 1 ATF so I wanted to be extra sure the
Mobil 1 would work fine and that it's not the same as the Chrysler
fluid.

The mileage I have currently is 118K, not 188K.

I probably should have asked the question better; Google might want to
consider coming up with a form for technical questions like computer
problems.  All the things that were suggested in the answer were
things I had already checked.  However, the researcher did a decent
job answering the question as I asked it.

I've been to many sources to help clarify whether my engine is an
"interference type" or an "non-interference type".  This is the only
information I've found that can account for my car's having bent
valves.  Thank you for this research.  I don't know why my mechanic
and dealer keep coming up with the wrong answer.

Thank you so much for the answers!  I neglected to mention that all
this irish moss surrounds my koi pond - I'm going to have to be super
careful to avoid getting any of this chemical or runoff into the
water. I will probably apply some of it by spraying from an inch or
two away, and by painting the tops of the grass with a paint brush
soaked in the chemical. Or maybe I'll soak paper towels and lay the
towels onto the grass/irish moss- I think then most of the chemicals
will only get to the tops of the grass leaves. The moss is actually
transplanted from my yard- I realized I had patches of it growing
everywhere, at a price much better than the local nursery. Of course I
should have herbicided the grass out of the moss BEFORE moved I cut up
the patches and moved them next to my fish pond...!
