Thank you for your research, errol!  More then I expected.  
The FX5200 may make serve as good book marker in the DoomIII manual. 
This time I'll wait, a week or two before it's realised, before I rush
out and buy another video card, and then another, after its realise

This got me very close.  The settings were in a different place and I
had to remove some ...LargeScreen... settings while blocking standard
resolutions.  The particular key you mentioned is for *adding*
non-standard modes.  But, I did get there, so thank you!  FYI, here's

Worked first time around! I am so glad that you explained it and not
just gave me a bunch of links from google search results, cause I have
already gone thru bunches of them and did not find what I wanted. It
helped that you also run Windows XP Pro, it gave me more confidence to
your answer. THANKS. The part that said  "Windows will actually say
it's a text file, no need to worry" was doubly reassuring.
