Every once in awhile you get such great service like this you start to
believe in Google. Great Job.

Yes, I only bid $2, but given the apparent ubiquity of the question, I
thought I might get more interesting answers than "why not?".
(Although the "best of" answer _almost_ got you off the hook.) I did
like the quote by Kipling. But in the end, the sheer number of answers
I recieved for my $2 made up for the less then penetrating replies, in
their totality.

Thank you for your help.  The Oriental Institute reference was
especially useful since I am a graduate of the University of Chicago
as well as having grown up as a faculty child there.  A handy citation
in a family difference of opinion!

Answer is a good one. Although I scoured the EU website and managed to
miss this!! I wanted to show (for a business related reason) that
there were a similar per capita number of English speakers in Czech
Republic to Poland and Romania and this shows it to be ahead of both
so is great for my purposes....even though I suspect it isn't actually
true!

Except for your recommendation of a Wigan Rugby League shirt for a
YORKSHIRE Terrier.

The only football club that Daisy has ever supported is Oldham
Athletic and that's soccer!

Yes, I know that Oldham, like Wigan, is in Lancashire but that's the
team she supports.

However, I still think that she might prefer a Slide Scanner and she
is now very impressed by the Nikon.

Good news.  Although a trip to the Royal Institute is out of the
question, I stopped by a university and picked up a copy of Dewar's
Collected Papers.  Sure enough, here is what I'm looking for.

I was a bit disappointed with this answer at first, but I have come to
believe that this is the best answer possible.  This information
doesn't seem to be available online.

I need a reminder of the fact that details of 100+ year old
experiments are only to be found in print.  I could have arrived at
this answer myself if I were willing to think in more traditional
terms.
