Thanks for the explanation. I understand it intellectually, but it
refuses to gel in my mind for some reason. I think I have to see one

in general, so "it" hits it best. However, I would use "they" only if
I were speaking about, e.g., the Federal Open Market Committee. So

The answer was pretty well thought out, but I did find the right
answer myself. I do not think that your answer could be the right
answer because of the cow country clash. A festival is not a clash
unless there is some sort of contest.
