This answer was excellent. The result was that I opened an account
with Scottrade with full confidence. Amazingly, I won't be paying ANY
trade fees or account fees which more than offsets the $12 I paid to

Overall a very well researched answer.  The arguments found against
sweatshop labor were fairly weak and would probably be easily picked
apart by conservatives, however.

At first I thought you simply confirmed what I had already suspected,
but your information was the starting point for finding out it's a bit
more complex than I had thought. And thanks for the extra
clarification and the links you found!

The problem of this answer is that it includes civil and political
violence which, however, does not qualify as war.
The suppression of Tiananmen Sq demonstration does not belong in this
list. (Even though China of course does.)
Same problem with the internal squabbles in Bangladesh. 
Albania, just for having had a communist government, cannot be called a
country at war during that time.
I have found similar lists before, so, it is actually not that useful.

Sorry, for the delay. This is my first Google question/answer...

Good answer. Not definite though. The only thing that would *really*
put my mind at rest would be a statement from the IOC or equivalent
stating the reason. However, as you stated, there is probably an
historical reasoning as to why we go to *just* the Olympics as Great
Britain. Interesting also that Sydney is the last one where this will
be the case.

Anyway, an answer that long and thorough deserves the $20 in my eyes.
Not sure what happens now. Guess it goes to you?
