think I shall try the live-trap option and keep my cat indoors for the
time being. Living in the UK, I am not used to the idea of an "indoor"
cat as such. No doubt this is due to the fact that we don't usually
have to worry about predators!

Thank you for your work and for your answers to my problem. They are
much appreciated.

I want to avoid plumbing solutions if I can, so have held them back
for possible future use.

The alarm scheme will, I think, not be workable as Mother-in=Law is
also somewhat deaf (I regret I failed to mention that).

I have yet to check out the the 'Slotted Spung Valve' , but I believe
that it will be a manually operated spring-up plug with which I am
familiar.

Another response suggested a plastic bowl, and confiscation of the
sink plug. I cannot think why this solution did not occur to me as it
is our own system at home. Mother-in-Law has been given a new blue
bowl, and says that she is using it every day. What the truth is I do
not know, but there have beeen no more floods as yet.

I don't think I fully understood the way the research was conducted.
The researcher did fine, but perhaps this was not the right approach
for me to take in trying to determine the solution to my problem.

Researcher answered question with his own expert knowledge and
experience, which, assuming it is all true, makes for a good answer,
but may not be so helpful for those with similar questions who are
depending simply on Google searches (those who would study the
researcher's search techniques)!  Only way it could have been better
is with links to supporting documentation on official government
websites that said the same things.

I appreciate the one major reference you turned up, which is very
helpful.  I do think that some more detail on the old vs. new choice
would have been germane to the original question; I was able to turn
up some useful analyses myself in a few minutes.
