A tough, almost intractable problem.  It took a couple of attacks, but

Thanks.  I got a good head start into my research, and I appreciate
your efforts.
Rather than the "non-standard" body types, like the 3500 and Optio
330, I will concentrate on a more average size body that can
accomodate more features and uses AA and not proprietary batteries. 
Steves-digicams is extraordinarily comprehensive, and will keep me
busy for a while.

The final answer was precise and helpful. The initial answer

Right on! Those were exactly what I was looking for. I don't know why
I thought "The End of the Party" was by Poe. I heard it on a tape
once; it must be available as a recorded book. If you, or anyone else,

MAC OS 9.2.2 CD-ROM arrives from Apple...I can't really proceed until

Well done, tisme. For two bucks, I was expecting an answer more along
the lines of, "Yup, your being hosed." After checking the links you
provided, it seems that "Yup, we're being hosed." But I liked seeing
it printed in a well thought out manner.
