webadept-ga from my perspective, was very helpful, knowledgeable and
very tactful in his answers and his efforts are greatly appreciated.

The answer sounded competent, but it had little useful content.  It
referred to comments on our page as "spamming"; however that's not
what I know as spam (unsolicited email). Comments are comments - not
spam. It also said that the robots.txt file blocked access to much of
the site, which is clearly not so; it blocks access to technical
directories only.

In addition, the answer referred to webmaster help-sites that speak in
jargon, using obscure terms like "cloaking", "spamming", and "doors",
leaving us no further ahead.

I realize that sometimes we have to spend money to find answers, but
this sort of help is not very useful.  Is the intention to have us
keep spending more and more money for little specks of information?

The real answer to my question was obtained from a Google discussion
group by a friend who received the answer as follows:
I have some great news about your website. I posted a question on a
specialist Google forum asking why it has been banned. I got 45
responses! A few were from an employee of Google who moderates the
forum. This is one of his responses:

 

‘Hey Neil, were you using WebPosition Gold for this domain until
recently? Looks like that's what did it for you. I'll re-enable your
domain and you should be back in within a day or so. Please help
spread the word that rank checking programs can lead not just to IPs
being banned but trouble for domains as well. We did another pass to
turn off a chunk of domains that use rank checking programs recently.’

 

So it looks like Web Position Gold was the reason why you were banned.
As there was clearly no foul play involved Google are going to re-list
your site hopefully by the end of the day. It seems they don’t like
people using WPG as it slows google down a bit.

 

Another interesting point was raised in the forum – how does google
stop people using WPG on their competitors to get them banned? They
also check the IP address of the computer where WPG is being run from,
so they know if you’re actually checking your own domain or a
competitor.

I did point out in my question I was aware of the basic rules and was
seeking a solution and in fact the recommended action although sound
did not offer the solution. No one who had looked at my site  thought
I had done anything seriously wrong although there was room for
improvement.

That's enough for me - in particular the page from Keele proved very
helpful in not only my "Home" problem, but general setup of my Exceed
config.

Thank you for the thorough answer.  My mind can rest now that I know
about these thresholds.

A note about the research:  When I researched this myself, I did not
know to call the marble strip a transition.  Knowing that term would
have made my search much more fruitful.

I have people that work for me that are going through all of the
questions and giving me their recommendation for how all of the
questions that I have asked should be rated. I had to make an
exception for this question and rate it personally. The responses I
received from this question is what caused me to ask over 60 $ 100
questions. In fact I will always look forward to visiting this site
when I need quality research done. All of the responses seemed to be
answered well, however is was the comment from larre-ga that caused a
stir from the people in my department and put me in a position to
break out the credit card and have the people on this site do the
research that we needed done. So again, thank you to all who
responded, my hat is off to larre-ga who went above and beyond and
ensured that I will always look at this site as a leader in the
research field.

Great job Webadept.  Thanks. While i'm here, thanks for the other
comments coming in to.  Yep I would pay a slightly smaller fee several
times over, it would be great to get multiple answers to this kind of
question.  This has been a great forum me to learn more and understand
peoples perceptions and thinking. Kind of different than what is was
intented but if everyone is getting paid I assume everyone is happy.
Hope i'm not overhogging the resources. Thanks again Webadept, and all
others that have taken paid questions, and unpaid comments.  (Let me
pay a bit on the comments too Google, i'd be happy to).

first attempt to answer presented information readily available and
dealt primarily with the European concerns with Spring migration of
game birds. Second attempt was more to the point and helpful for my
interests

I was simply looking for a few suggestions of concrete examples of
nutritionally sound and biologically dense foods.  Instead, I got a
long answer that basically sounds like it was lifted from some college
student's recent final exam essay, complete with web-links.  I don't
want to have to continue researching the question myself.  That's why
I paid for a straight answer.

I rated this a week ago but did it wrong!  GREAT answer, I used the
first web site provided, created an entire constitution and by-laws
based on the inforamtion provided in 1 day! I also had the answer in
about 30 minutes. Good work!
