all answers were good as to the fact they dealt with the problem. All
answers showed a knowledge of the problem. sublime1-ga was more on the
mark with a driver problem.  No answer was on the mark exactly (bad
graphics card), but pointed me to the problem and assisted in its
resolution. Google answers is a valuable resource.

Better access to the content of the relevant academic journals might
have led to a better answer, but I have no ability to judge how
feasible that might be.  This was my first question, and I am quite
pleased with the result.

Useful answer! I've some old carbide lathe turning tools somewhere
which'll serve nicely to score the glass, & I'm sure I can rig up a
jig from scrap to keep the scored line true. Candle and ice cube..
worth a go! Thanks for the above info.
