While markj's answer didn't meet all the initial criteria I'd set when posing the question, he submitted a comment beforehand asking whether what he had was sufficient. I responded that as long as it met a modified criteria I gave him, that his answer would be sufficient, which it was. His answer was very complete and included sufficient context for me to properly assess its value. Good job markj. |

thud {sound of granny smacking her forehead}. I heard Alfred and found so many hits on Goog that I thought it must *be* Alfred. my scent tracking skills are completely allery-congested. I can't even smell a bad spelling today. I'm so glad yours a keener, dear boy. thank you so much for putting gran back on the straight and narrow. I will read up on this plea. gran's a pretty shifty character. you never know when this information will come in handy. *mwah-mwah* {continental kisses) |

Huston Smith's education
Category: Reference, Education and News Rating and comments by: apteryx-ga |
Excellent work, markj--all the more so because I fully expected this question to be answered by someone who knew exactly who he was and probably had several of his books on the shelf. That's why I didn't even bother with an identifying tag. I've known about Huston Smith for a good 40 years, have heard him lecture a number of times (and have tickets to hear him again in February), and have several of his books that he autographed in my presence. My companion for the upcoming lecture asked me the question about his education, and I found that despite the quantity of information available online, I couldn't locate anything about his own studies. That he won't write an autobiography is remarkable, especially since my personal impression has always been that he enjoyed receiving a lot of attention. That makes me think again. Your finds are illuminating, and I thank you. Oh, one more thing. Having been very close to a college a lot like CMC, I wouldn't draw any conclusion about the substance of his education from CMC's mission. Choice of institution probably had more to do with his upbringing as the son of missionaries than with his areas of academic interest. As a liberal arts college it would have course offerings in all academic fields, and they would not necessarily come with a religious slant. I was hoping to find out what he majored in, but I'll settle for what you've found. Thank you, Apteryx |

Category: Business and Money > Employment Rating and comments by: pcventures-ga |
Great answer - thank you so much for going the extra mile and getting to the part that I was *most* interested in. To clarify, what I meant in my original "clarification" was that I had neglected to mention that part in my initial questions. I was simply shoring up a question that I should have made better in the first place. Your answer was excellent both times around. Thank You! |

An outstanding, thoroughly researched answer based on slim information, which markj did an excellent job pulling the pertinent pieces of data from, asking for clarification when appropriate to keep on track. And (markj doesn't even know this yet), 100% accurate! The painting is called "Charitably Inclined!" Absoultely MUCH more than I had hoped for. Kudos! |
