I received the basic formula for what I was after. Unfortunatly
turning that into a real world application will take a bit more work.

After an initial disagreement concerning the capabilities of BMP
files, I am now satisfied with the guidance provided - JPGs should
only be used for browsing purposes, for any other purpose a lossless
format should be chosen. Thank you Google.

I'm happy with your answer, even if it is (as you've indicated) not
100% conclusive, absent manufacturer's diagrams. I believe that Jewish
law treats an action with greater-than-even odds of permissibility as
100% permitted, so in effect your answer is good enough. Thanks!

Since the answer wasn't available on line (or at least I couldn't find
it, and appearently neither could you), I needed someone with personal
experience, and that is what I got.

One quibble with the statement - "rush hour" traffic in general slows
the route down by about 40-60% compared to optimal travel times.  It
seems as if what you meant was - "rush hour" traffic increases the
travel time by about 40-60% compared to optimal travel times - since
this is the calculation you gave.

I hope you are right.

Okay - answerguru did his best, but never quite hit the mark here. I
learnt a lot about ways of solving a problem like this, both from the
answer and the comments; but in the end, it was the commenters who
came up with the correct solution.

I feel like a swine giving a low rating, since I'm a researcher
myself. but with questions like this there's clearly a right and a
wrong answer.

Although I now understand that Microsoft Excel has definate limits, I
still contacted Microsoft regarding the answer given and was told the
following:

"Action: when working with a large data base (20K - 30K records
Result: needing to filter out data by agent and do some calculations
on the data and format certain cells.
Cause: n/a
Resolution: - use the autofilter, copy the range for each agent, and
then paste the information into a new worksheet.  use the autosum and
then format the cells.

- use advanced filter to something similar except allows you to copy
the information to another section of the active worksheet, then copy
the info to a new worksheet for further formatting and summing like
for autofilter.

Final recommendation was to start getting the data into Access for
easier report generation by agent."

I have no criticism of the answerguru-ga; however...I would have been
appreciative of a similar answer regarding chopping-up the data.

I asked how to view a particular file.  Answerguru asserted that these
files were not "viewable", because they were not meant to be viewed. 
Answerguru provided ambiguous evidence that his assertion was correct,
showing that the file extension was consistent with his assertion. 
Answerguru did not account for the other fact stated in my question,
regarding the header.  I believe Answerguru made a sincere effort to
answer my question, and that he may even be right, which is why he
get's two stars rather than a one, although I am still left wondering
what kind of file I have in my posession.
