Hello icudoc,
Let me confirm your statement about there being hundreds of sites that
offer these types of services. Conferencing can be broken down almost
infinitely. Narrowing them down can be a daunting task, but I always
find that when I compare review sites of any sort - we can get it done
right. Here is what I was able to find:
The first place I want to send you is to WebSeminarian. You may have
already heard of it, but they do offer an extensive review section
that I find to be an invaluable resource:
WebSeminarian Reviews
http://www.webseminarian.com/reviews/
Weeding through all the links on that site, I was able to list the top
ones that they currently have a review for:
PlaceWare
http://main.placeware.com/index.cfm
Centra
http://www.centra.com
Encounter
http://www.e2c.com
Genesys
http://www.genesys.com/
About.com web guides has an enormous section dedicated to the review
and analysis of web conferencing. Of particular interest would be the
following topics, as they address some of the main things you should
be concerned with in your decision:
Bandwidth ( The more usually means the better )
http://netconference.about.com/library/weekly/aa112800a.htm
Web Conferencing Pointers
http://netconference.about.com/library/weekly/aa041500a.htm
I found another article, where the writing company pitted a few of the
services against each other. This is more specific to IP video
conferencing, and it allows you to drill down your decision based on
their experts opinions:
Network World Fusion Article by Christine Perey
http://www.nwfusion.com/reviews/2002/0121rev.html
(Specifically the 'What's Right for you' subsection)
In looking at this article, I was further linked to this outstanding
resource, that allows you to select comparison criteria for the video
conferencing services they have reviewed:
http://www.nwfusion.com/reviews/2002/ipvideo0121compare.jsp
The last site I want you to take a peek at is 'CommWeb'. I didn't read
the whole article, but it seems these guys really know what they are
talking about when it comes to web collaboration services:
Technology Spotlight: Web Conferencing Services by Isaac Hillson
http://www.commweb.com/article/COM20020823S0002
I hope this offers you enough resources to get you started. Should you
want further clarification, please ask before rating this answer, as I
would love to be of further assistance.
To find these sites I searched Google for:
web conferencing service providers reviews
://www.google.com/search?q=web+conferencing+service+providers+reviews
Thanks for the great question!
