Hello Branco,

Thank you for your question.

I carried out an extensive search and I have located the best freely
available resource on Rottweiler kennel construction on the Internet.
This information is presented by Rottweiler Kennel Vom Hause Neff, and
it includes information, pictures and plans for the construction of
their own Rotweilers dog kennel. To complement this information I
assembled a list of links with short excerpts to a number of websites
concerning key factors such as measurements, flooring, walls and
lighting for kennel construction in general that will prove to be
extremely useful. I’m including kennel construction plans for large
dogs as well. Lastly I am including a few kennel construction plans
that are available for online purchase.

The Rottweiler Kennel Vom Hause Neff built their own Rottweiler kennel
and are facilitating the plans with added information on their
website. The description consists of steps to follow, numerous
pictures during the construction process and 5 building plans with
views showing North, West and East elevations and floor plans. Each
view can be easily downloaded to your computer and then enlarged and
printed by right clicking on the plan and then choosing “save image
as”.

“Steps:

- Building plans were drawn up and approved.

- The foundation trenches were dug in our back garden. The concrete
foundation was then poured into them.

- Once the concrete had set, the walls were bricked. The foundation
was filled with sand and compacted.

- The roof was fitted over the kennel. We chose to cover the complete
kennel area, to provide shelter from sun and rain. The floor slab was
then reinforced and poured.

- The front steps were bricked, and the rear kennel enclosures were
built on top of the floor slab.

- The brickwork was plastered and painted. Galvanized metal stable
doors were fitted to the kennels. We chose galvanized metal doors, as
wooden doors are likely to bind with high humidity and are likely to
get chewed...

- The galvanized fence frames and gates were fitted to the runs.

-The completed kennel. We have divided the kennel into two adjacent
runs. The rear enclosures each have a wooden floor board, covered by a
rubber mat and woolen blankets for warmth.”

The following kennel construction information from the Hints and
Things website is suitable for any breed of dog as it is based on the
measurements of the breed.

“Measurements:

- Make it large enough for the dog to sleep or lie down in the inner
room without being cramped, allowing an extra 150mm (6in) to the
length and width measurements of the dog taken when it is lying curled
up.

- Make the outer room half as wide as the inner one.

- For the height measure from the floor to the top of the dog's head
when it is in a sitting position and add 150 mm.

- Make the doorways shoulder high and 50mm (2in) more than the
shoulder width.

- Add the length and width measurements of the two rooms together and
make a floor to this size using 18mm (3/4 in) exterior grade Plywood.
For a base, build a frame the same size as the floor, using 50 x 100mm
(2 x 4in) softwood timber.

- Fit the floor to the base, using 32mm (1 1/4in) No. 8 woodscrews.

- Make the walls and inner partition from 18mm exterior grade
chipboard with end walls cut at 45 degree angles for a sloping roof.
Cut doorways in the partition and in one wall.

- Use 18mm exterior grade plywood for the roof panels. Join them at
the apex with plastic corner joints. Allow 50mm extra on the length
and width measurements of the roof panels to provide eaves. Cover the
roof with bituminous felt, held with galvanized clout nails.

- Assemble the walls, base and inner partition using plastic corner
joints or screwing through short 25 x 25mm (1 x 1 in) battens. For
cleaning make the roof detachable, held by cabin hooks.

- Paint the outside walls and base with one coat of primer followed by
undercoat and gloss or a wood preservative - ensure you check the
product used is pet friendly.

- End walls and central partition have pointed tops to hold a sloping
roof.”

According to the Ralston Purina Company, six important components make
up a properly built and kept kennel:

- The plan and the design
- The exterior kennel construction
- The interior kennel construction
- The grooming and washing area
- The kennel temperature
- The waste disposal system
The above are explained in more detail here:

Flooring:

“Wood flooring or walls should be avoided because of splinters, and
because wood floors are almost impossible to clean and disinfect
thoroughly. The floors inside the pens should be hard-surfaced so they
can be washed easily. Concrete makes excellent run flooring, but it
must be well designed and well maintained to avoid cracks, depressions
and rough places that are hiding places for insects, rodents and
parasite eggs. If gravel runs are used, droppings should be picked up
at least once a day, several times a day if several dogs are kept in a
small area.”

Walls:

“For efficiency in cleaning and maintenance, concrete and concrete
block construction is generally recommended. Walls of this type, with
concrete floors and kennel runs, make for a durable and economical
commercial kennel structure. Frame buildings may be used, but they can
present problems. Dogs will usually chew on wood, unless it is
specially protected, and this not only creates an unfavorable
appearance, but provides hiding places for bacteria and parasites.
Wood absorbs more urine and urine odors than concrete, and wet wood
deteriorates rapidly. The higher initial cost of a concrete and
concrete block building is usually offset by lower maintenance costs,
ease of cleaning, savings on insurance and general appearance.”

Size of Blocks:

“Concrete block walls are used throughout. Exterior walls are of
8-inch blocks in the two-story section, and 6-inch in the one-story
section. (Check your local building codes to determine what size
concrete blocks are acceptable.) For added strength, reinforcing mesh
was used at every third row during construction of exterior walls.
Interior walls and partitions are all of 4 inch concrete block. The
epoxy paint used to seal the new surface provides easy cleaning, which
helps protect against disease and parasite infestation.”

Winter Climate:

“In areas where winter freezing occurs, it is necessary to have
footings poured to sub-freezing depths, particularly for concrete or
concrete block construction. This helps protect against seasonal
movement of the building and resultant wall damage. The roofing
material selected for a kennel building may be whatever type is
generally used in your area.”

Temperature - Roofing:

“Four to six inches of poured insulation or insulation bats are
adequate for ceiling insulation. A fan to move air through the attic
area will aid in cooling during summer months. Air conditioning is
desirable in working rooms. In hot climates and in boarding and
veterinary kennels, air conditioning throughout the kennel may be
needed.

Kennel Lighting is discussed at the Purina Website. This information
is useful for any breed of dog.

A short excerpt:

“Both natural and artificial lighting should be used in kennel
operations. Windows should be at least 5 feet above the floor to avoid
breakage by dogs or so that bins, cabinets and other equipment can be
placed against walls without interfering with natural light. In
addition, an adequate number of incandescent or fluorescent fixtures
should be installed in the ceiling. Wall plugs should not be installed
in dog pens unless they are protected, such as behind whelping boxes
or encased in metal boxes that cannot be opened by dogs. These plugs
should also be waterproof. Elsewhere, wall plugs should be high enough
off the floor to avoid the danger of dogs chewing on electrical cords
and to prevent contact with water.”

The following information concentrates on kennels for the Alaskan
Malamute which is a large and powerful sled dog. They can weigh over
100 lbs and stand up to 25-30 inches high at the shoulder. Since the
Rottweiler breed is also a large strong breed, these plans,
specifications, diagrams and material lists will be of use as well.
