Hi Toddmo,
Bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) is found in the southern regions of the
United States and throughout tropical and subtropical countries. It
has a variety of uses from feeding livestock, preventing soil erosion
on landscapes, yard covering, and commonly used as turf for football,
golf, bowling greens, and tennis.
Before we get into the actual methods, keep in mind there are two
different kinds of fertilizer. Fast release fertilizers are readily
available for your lawn to absorb, but often deplete early through
leeching. Slow release fertilizers are often organic and need special
microbial activities to break it down. Both fertilizers are effective
when used properly.
Fertilizer Choices

In Texas, fast release fertilizers should be applied during April 15,
June 1, July 15 and Sept. 1. Slow release fertilizers should be
released during May 1 and Sept. 1.
According to Gene R. Taylor and Jason Gray of Texas A&M, in their
article " Maintaining Bermudagrass Lawns," between the months of June
and August:
"Continue the fertilizer program begun in the spring, applying 1 to
1.5 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet every 4 to 10 weeks.
Without soil test information, it is recommended that you use a
fertilizer that either contains nitrogen only (21-0-0, ammonium
sulfate) or is low in phosphorus (Examples: 21-3-6 or 15-0-15) to
reduce the chance of excessive phosphorus build-up in the soil. Such
build-ups can lead to deficiencies in iron and zinc."
With much of the research that I read, avoid over fertilizing your
lawn. Take extra caution on calculating your square footage and how
much fertilizer you allocate. If your lawn is shaded, lessen the
amount of applied fertilizer. After fertilizing, immediately water
your lawn so the nutrients will soak into the soil. Lastly, never
fertilize before a rain as the nutrients will run off into valuable
watersheds.
