Question ID: 10047
What are the top 25 sources (ranked by $ amount awarded) of research
or grant money available to medical students?
Qualifiers:
1. my research is in dermatology (many $ sources specify the area of
research; some don't)
2. I am Italian and English/Welsh (not a minority); I live in
California;
3. I do clinical research (not basic science research; some sources
specify)
4. Please include any $ sources that are specifically available for
research in dermatology.
Thanks!

5. The grant or award CAN NOT be "need-based". In other words, it
needs to be merit-based.

I have compiled a list of available grants whose deadlines have not
passed. While I imagine that many of these links will be useful some
may deal with a specific area of dermatology that you are not working
with i.e. cutaneous oncology, etc. I have listed the grants with a
brief description as well as the award amount and a link to the
application or information section of their website. The grants vary
in value from $50,000 to simple research stipends that are
considerably less lucrative. The grant criteria also varies however
all the grants listed are available to individuals (as opposed to
institutions). At the bottom of the list I have included some
relevant links to articles and grant aggregators.

The American Skin Association has several available grants (listed
below):
&lt;a href=&quot;<a href="http://www.skinassn.org/research.htm">http://www.skinassn.org/research.htm</a>&quot;&gt;<a href="http://www.skinassn.org/research.htm">http://www.skinassn.org/research.htm</a>&lt;/a&gt;

Dhale: Thanks for your help. Many of the listings you cited require
that the recipient have credentials more advanced than medical
student. For example, anything that requires an MD degree, completion
of a dermatology residency, a faculty member (for example, an
assistant professor), or Fellowship (which comes after residency)
should be excluded in the search. I look forward to the results of
your refined search!
Reason this answer was rejected by porter-ga:
This response while thorough did not really answer my question. I
requested a clarification but did not receive one.
porter-ga rated this answer:2 out of 5 stars
This response while thorough did not really answer my question because
most of these funding sources are for a different applicant than me.

Some partial answers while you wait for your researcher to find the
full list:

http://www.dermfnd.org/rap.html
This page has a list (10) of Research Award programs. The newest one
is $45,000 "to foster the development of clinical scholars in
pediatric dermatology that will advance the field through patient
care, research and teaching."

And this one from http://www.pedsderm.net/ResearchGrant.htm:
$15,000 "for scholarly clinical or basic research in the field of
pediatric dermatology"

Since you are a med student, and many others before have provided
information before me on web-sites that might be of assitance to you,
perhaps you should visit your counselor or mentoring professor as they
would have the most up to date information on grant opportunites as
well as the research sector of your university/college/department. It
is always most helpful to use these type of resources for their
opinions and assitance, since they often have obtained such grants and
they will also be the people who can speak on your behalf for
recommendation.
