I am looking for an image of a painting titled "Flowers on a Bench"
(or very similar). It was exhibited at the Wildenstein (sp?) Gallery
in NYC in the mid-1970's. I believe the artist is Gustave Courbet.

I have not yet found a Courbet work with the name "Flowers on a
Bench." However the link below is to a work named "Fleurs" :

Could this be the image you want? If it is, I will post an answer. If
not, I will keep looking.

Please bear with me for one more try before I turn it over to other
researchers. It is always difficult being sure that images found in
our research match what the questioner has in mind.

Here is a beautiful painting by Manet (like Courbet, a French
Impressionist). It is called "Banc" ("Bench") and featured a park
bench in a setting dominated by flowers.

Could this be it?

Thanks again but still no - the first one is much closer to the memory
I have of this painting.
I did find a mention of "Flowers on a Bench" by Courbet in a
Dutch-language PDF
document by doing a Google search.

Dear charliec,

Here is a website with a picture of the painting you are looking for:

Gemäldegalerie von Gustave Courbet, by O. Späth, 2002 (in German)
http://www.spaeth.net/galerie/Blumen_1.htm

And this is the picture from that site only:
http://www.spaeth.net/galerie/blumen_1.jpg

The original French title is "Fleurs sur un banc", in English exactly
"Flowers on a Bench". Coubert painted it in 1862, and according to the
German text below the picture, it is currently part of a private
collection.

I found it by searching for the German "Blumen auf einer Bank", which
means "flowers on a bench", after you mentioned that you read about it
in a Dutch source, assuming that the German name of the work might
resemble the Dutch. However, I was not able to locate this painting
elsewhere, neither under its German title, nor under the French
"Fleurs sur un banc". Obviously, it is a less-known Courbet painting.
So it proved, alas, also impossible to find a picture of higher
quality or a source for a print of it. But nevertheless you now have
the correct original title, the year of origin, and a clear impression
of the painting's appearance as well as a proof that "Flowers on a
Bench" really exists and is indeed a work of Gustave Courbet.

Search terms used:
"Blumen auf einer Bank":

"fleurs sur un banc":

I hope this helps!

I think my researcher has found all there is to find, even though I
had hoped there would be more information.
