There are far too many apartment-listing web sites and services out
there, and even the best of them are very, very poorly designed. Thus,
I'd like to pay someone (e.g., you) to do some painfully boring
research for me.
I would like a CLEAR, WELL-FORMATTED document detailing some apartment
options:
Location: Within 20 minutes of Ardmore, PA (19003). As far from
Philadelphia as possible (which translates, roughly, to "within 20
minutes of Ardmore, but not much East of it").
I would like to pay approximately $500/month. Slightly more is OK,
especially if utilities are included. Obviously, this pretty much
limits my choices to studio/efficiency.
Cablemodem or DSL service MUST be available.
I have no pets.
I am 24 years old - retirement communities are not appropriate.
Searching local schools' housing information might yield good results.
(Like rooms in houses for rent, rather than apartment complexes.)
I would like to move within 2-3 months.
Feel free to ask for any clarifications necessary. |

May I ask why you want to be "as far from Philadelphia" as possible?
You are precluding some attractive places just east of Ardmore, and
actully some nice places just over the line in the city.
Also, do you want easy access to public transportation?
Would you live in an apartment complex?
Do you have a preference as to whether it is a "college town" or not?
Do you want a "Main Street?"
Are you willing to pay extra for parking? If so, how much?
Can you provide references? Do you have any problem with a credit
check?
Are you employed? To where will you be commuting?
Are you prepared to make a deposit equal to two-months rent?
If a room in a house, do you want kitchen privileges and/or a private
bath?
Sorry for the interrogation, but the answers are all necessary to make
any kind of useful list.

I don't really have a problem with Philadelphia per se, I just don't
want an overly urban environment. The less concrete per square mile,
the better. :)
Access to public transportation is not necessary. I would live in a
complex, but I'd prefer not to. A college town would be wonderful but
not necessary. I'd prefer NOT to be on a main street.
My current landlord is available as reference; I have lived at my
current residence for 20 months. A credit check is fine.
I am not currently employed; I have taken a leave of absence in order
to work on some personal projects. I have budgeted sufficient savings
for at least two years of rent before resuming employment. My last job
(5/2001 to 10/2002) paid $60000 annually.
I can make two months rent deposit.
Kitchen privileges are good but not essential; a private bath is very
highly desirable, but if the house is especially nice in other
respects having a shared bathroom is ok.

I am willing to pay a small amount for parking, but I don't really
know what is the typical amount.

Hello placain-
The following listings are from current local newspaper classifieds (4
different papers/scores of ads). They contain all the information
available. All are in areas where at least cable is available. DSL, of
course, is dependent on distance from the central telephone office,
and I have no way of ascertaining that.
My concern is that you do not intend to move for two to three months,
so I'm not sure that the timing of this search is the best. One would
more usually search a few weeks before moving, unless you are dealing
with an apartment complex, and even then there's usually not too much
lead time.
As for price, there is very little available for $500 or less in
desirable neighborhoods. So, many of the listings I've included exceed
that amount.
There are some other places available (college student housing) in
West Chester but that exceeds your 20 minute limit (don't be fooled by
the milage on a map, you'll not get to West Chester from Ardmore in
under 30 minutes.)
The room in Rosemont sounds to be one of the best so I listed it
first. Next on my list would be the apartment in Phoenixville.
I included the East Brandywine listing because it's a great country
area, but, like West Chester, it's more than 20 mins.
Please let me know if this listing fulfills your request and I may
post it as an answer.
Thanks.

Thanks very much! Go ahead and post that as an answer - I'm going to
spend the next day or two calling and looking at these places;
hopefully I'll be able to move sooner than I had thought.
