Hi 888!

Personally, I would not oppose the adoption of .NET.
I would look long and hard at the benefits or pitfalls and possibly
discuss the matter with an IT or Web Services consultancy
It clearly has many advantages over various other platforms such as
the rather old Java and would give a company an enviable edge over the
competition by being so technically competent and ready to embrace new
opportunities.

Microsoft has lots of Web pages on the subject, the main site has a
document outlining some key points: [
http://www.microsoft.com/net/business/ways.asp ].
However, Microsoft are pushing (i.e. selling) this service
aggressively so remember that any of the content on their site will be
strongly sales orientated.
They have a short interview with one of the managers of the project
here: [ http://www.microsoft.com/net/business/nethess.asp ] which you
may like to read.

I do agree to a certain extent that the XML basis for the platform has
many strong points and is being used for database applications by lots
of companies on the Web and within recent Windows programs.
A quick overview of XML: [ http://www.w3schools.com/xml/xml_whatis.asp
] provided by W3 Schools, part of the World Wide Web Consortium.
Also, the future of the Web seems to be more XML-based with the
adoption of XHTML [ http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/#xhtml ].
Indeed, even mainstream Web sites are taking the plunge and completely
re-coding their sites in XHTML, a good example would be Wired News: [
http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,55675,00.html ], who took
this measure.

All this action by Microsoft has caused a slight backlash though, I
remember reading an article on CNET [ www.cnet.com ] about the
attempts by Microsoft to "take over the Internet" about a year ago. I
found a similar article by the respected BBC Corporation here in the
UK: [ http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/1337804.stm ].
Another angle on the ongoing battle between Sun and Microsoft,
relating to .NET: [ http://www.infoworld.com/articles/hn/xml/01/06/18/010618hnteched.xml
]

One thing about the .NET service is that it seems to have suddenly
"appeared" from no-where with a huge amount of confusion.
I remember when they first announced it, people thought it was a new
version of Windows, it's probably because of the poor explanations
from Microsoft that everyone has been slow to get used to the ideas
behind the framework.
The majority of the general public probably only hear of it when
accessing their Hotmail accounts in my opinion.
The mighty CNET offer plenty of articles on this state of affairs: [
http://news.com.com/2100-1001-948838.html ], [
http://news.com.com/2009-1001-274344.html ].

There are plenty of Web sites containing masses of information on .NET
and it's possible advantages.
I have listed a couple below for your convenience.

"Why .NET will take over the world" (ZDNet)

"Got Dot Net"

"The Show" (Microsoft Developer Network)

"Microsoft .NET Training Centre"

So, in summary - yes I would eventually adopt .NET as long as the
infrastructure was in place such as IT systems and fully trained
employees; but it has to be carefully considered and certainly not
rushed.
I would possibly sit back and keep a close eye on the development of
the platform for a while (maybe up to a year or so) and see how things
progress.

I used many Google searches while researching this for you, here are a
few of the links:

"advantages .net microsoft service"

Microsoft for non-biased information)
