I'd like to know the top ten Japanese search engines by the number of
searches made from each by percentage per month (or week, or day). I
would like to have the answer in the following format:

For example:

1.Google Japan: 40% 20,000,000 searches per month (or week, or day)
2.Yahoo Japan: 22% 11,000,000 searches per month(or week, or day)
3. etc
11. All others 5% 1,000,000 searches per month (or week, or day)

Dear stonemen:

I don't know that the information you are looking for is available. I
do have a list of the ten most popular Web properties in Japan along
with information on their audience reach and time spent on the site
per person. If this is of interest, please let me know, and I would
be pleased to post an answer.

Thank you,
okapi-ga

Stoneman..

I can provide the top 10 search engines in Japan, but I don't think
the information regarding their search numbers is available, at least
not in English that I can find.

To the Clarification(okapi-ga & tar_heel_v-ga),

I have found the information that you make reference to but what I
want are the ranking of each search engine and the associated stats
that my question mentions.

Thanks,
stonemen

stonemen,

I've started checking on the Japanese Google for the information you
are looking for. So far I've only found the top ten as of November
2000, but without access statistics:

http://www.kan-net.com/tool/mag1/010321.html

No surprise that, at that time, number one Yahoo had about as many
hits as the number two, three, four, five, and six sites combined.

But, in case I can find the information in the format you are looking
for, how recent do you require this information to be? Would anytime
within 2002 suffice?

Anytime within 2002 would be great.

It's easy to find many sources mentioning the top Japanese search
engines, and they all show slightly different lists, but the figures
are hard to find. Would you be willing to accept an answer without
figures, or do you really need definite figures to justify the
rankings on the top lists (many of what I've don't even rank the
search engines)? I suppose that you need a list with something to
justify the rankings, so I'll see what I could find. I suppose the
others who tried couldn't find some numbers or criteria to justify the
search engines' being listed among the best.

Hello Techtor,

You've come to the correct conclusion. Lots of Japanese lists but
none that I've found can justify the rankings. Google probably has
the answer. Ask your Google supervisor.

Thanks,
stonemen

I'm glad to be on the right track, though I doubt Google itself will
be willing to give out that information if it is their research. And
on another note, I wish to make known that we researchers here are
actually independent contractors for Google, so we don't really have a
"supervisor". But we do consult Google from time to time, so I'll see
what they can give. If this question expires, I was unable to get the
information you need.

Hi,

I don't think the info you need is available free of charge on the
Net.

Here's what I was able to find...

One site that gives some of the information you need is
http://www.webmasteraid.com/ has a function that is called "stat
gnome"
Click on the free report and select Japan. The unique numbers are not
available for any of the engines after the third entry, but according
to their figures the top three account for 100% of the searches. They
only list Japanese based search engines so the large ones such as
Yahoo and Google are not there.

They last updated their stats on 11/08/2002 15:41:38.

Nielsen//NetRatings (http://www.netratings.co.jp/US/monthly_Properties.htm)
lists the top ten properties but not all of these are search engines.

http://www.searchdesk.com/ is a page in Japanese that lists the major
search engines but only as a search portal. There is no statistical
data.

http://www.computingjapan.com/magazine/issues/1997/nov97/1197searchE.html
icludes information from 1997. I'm sure it's not still accurate, but
thought you might like to check historical data.

Hopefully someone else can find the missing link.
