I am writing a critical paper on the representation of Indigenous
Australians in the media, from early post-colonisation coverage to
contemporary publications. I must use citeable information in order to
assess the way in which this representation has contributed to the
broader Australian and worldwide perception of Indigenous Australians.

Hello aussies-ga,

I’m currently reading a recently published book about the Captain
Cook’s voyages of discovery and the chapters on his first encounter
with the aborigines are very interesting. The author’s commentary
compares his experiences in contemporary Australia as he retraces
Cook’s steps.

Blue Latitudes: Boldly Going Where Captain Cook Has Gone Before
Tony Horwitz, 2002

I highly recommend Blue Latitudes. It is thorough, interesting and
highly entertaining and it includes an extensive bibliography that
would meet your needs for citable information.

Enjoy!

Good morning aussies,

It was just a few days ago I ran across a related story. It concerned
the deaths of almost 100 aboriginals who were in police custody during
the 1980s. As a result of this a commission was formed (The Royal
Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (RCIADIC)).

The recommendations pertaining to how media should deal with
aboriginal issues can be found in the article on this web page.

Message Stick - RCIADIC

From the above page you can link to an article about cultural
protocol.

"Message Stick has produced this Indigenous Protocol site hoping to
assist journalists, filmmakers, producers and documentary makers to
understand the importance of abiding by Indigenous Protocols. This
document has been written as a guide to help bridge the gap between
the needs of Television and Film makers and the Indigenous people and
their customs."

While all of this doesn't give past information, it sheds some light
on the problems which are now recognized and are being addressed.
