I need to develop a chronological list of discoveries/advancements in
the field of human psychology. I need to know who made the discovery,
when, what the discovery was and how the discovery improved the human
condition. Most importantly, I am particuarlly interested in any
discoveries/advancements made by individuals who were laypersons so to
speak, individuals who were not experts in the field of human
psychology but someone still managed to discover something that
advanced the subject. Any lists or references to "laypersons" who
made important discoveries in ANY other field would also be very
useful. Thanks in advance.

Hi joew94~

There are many psychology timelines available. What follows are some
of the best I found on the web.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison's time line:
http://www.soemadison.wisc.edu/cp/history/Timeline.htm

Another college-produced time line:
http://www.redeemer.on.ca/~psychist/behavioral_psych/Timeline/timeline.htm

This site has three chronologies:
http://www.redeemer.on.ca/~psychist/unconscious_mind/untimeline.htm

A brief timeline:
http://allpsych.com/timeline.html

Here's a timeline going all the way back to ancient times, which
definitely includes "laypeople":
http://wizard.ucr.edu/~kmcneill/psy575/timeline.htm

Here's a very interesting, illustrated timeline, again going back to
ancient times. It includes a number of laypeople:
http://psychology.okstate.edu/museum/history

Here's a post-1950 timeline:
http://share.geocities.com/Athens/Delphi/6061/en_linha3.htm

Another good college-created timeline:
http://cc.cumberlandcollege.edu/acad/psych/HS/History%20of%20Psychology%20Timeline%201875-1899.htm

You may also find this site useful, as it provides links to psychology
"megasites," research journals, biographies, and more:
http://www.socialpsychology.org/history.htm

This site has some "history of" articles that may prove helpful, too:
http://psych.athabascau.ca/html/aupr/history.shtml

Here are just a few individuals I've arbitrarily chosen from the above
timelines, which you may wish to focus on, since they were laypeople
who influenced the history of psychology:

Jean-Martin Charcot

In addition, don't forget Darwin, whose theories tried to explain
human behavior with evolution. I'm sure you will discover others
within these timelines.

kriswrite-ga: Thanks for your quick answer. It looks good. I'm at
work so don't have time right now to check out the many web sites you
listed. Regarding the last part of my question, do you have any
suggestions how I can search for important discoveries/advancements
made by laypersons in OTHER fields. Thanks again. I'll take the time
to rate your answer later and I'm sure it will be a great rating.

kriswrite: You answered the first two parts of my question. The last
part was: "Any lists or references to 'laypersons' who made important
discoveries in any other field would be helpful." I am trying to
show, via a list of historical examples, that individuals do make
important discoveries in subject areas where they have no formal
training, degrees, etc. If you can easily give me ideas on how to
hunt down these examples, please let me know. But I don't want to
take more of your time than is reasonable i.e. I don't want this to
become your "Question from hell." :)

Don't worry! It's my job to give you the answer you're hoping to find!
:) I just misunderstood and thought you wanted only answers related
to psychology.

Here is one story that may interest you; an important historical
finding by an unknown librarian:
http://www.travel-watch.com/tudela.htm

A famous layperson who made extraordinary contributions to science was
Sir Isaac Newton; he was a student when he began forming his ideas:
http://www-gap.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Mathematicians/Newton.html

How about John Harrison, who was a self-taught clockmaker before he
tackled the problem of longitude:
http://www.rog.nmm.ac.uk/server.php?request=search%3Aall&searchKeyword=museum+harrison

And the man that may have discovered quinine:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/cancer/discoveries.html

Here is a list of famous inventors that may prove helpful to you:
http://media.fastclick.net/w/pop.cgi?sid=8835&m=2&CK=N&JS=N&c=591522

Another, comprehensive site about inventors:
http://glsd76.glcn.com/Webbasedresources/My%20Webs/mywebiresources/inventors.htm

A search through these will probably result in even more laypeople who
contributed to science and other important fields.

Keywords Used:
Inventors Accidental
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=inventors+accidental&btnG=Google+Search

Accidental Discover*
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=accidental+discover*

I hope that helps!

joew94-ga~

I had understood your question to ask for information on people who
had made discoveries/advances in psychology who were not in the feild
of psychology...Are you instead seeking info on laypeople who made
advances in feilds other than psychology?
