I am a grad student working on my thesis. For my final project, I
need to obtain digital images of German Stamps for the years 1913 -
1945, as well as a digital image of the first stamp issued in Israel.
I also need to obtain images of stamps issued in Hitler's honor
(apparently, at least one was issued on his birthday). The digital
images should be usable for reproduction into poster size. It is my
hope that I can get this done at a print shop like Kinkos.
I've contacted both the U.S. and German post offices, but have gotten
nowhere, I suppose I am just too unfamiliar with the subject (Not to
mention that my graduation date is looming). I had such success with
a previous question that I asked at this site, that I thought you
would be the best source to turn to.
I've set the price at $75.00. As a student, I am on a limited
stipend. However, if you honestly feel that you need to spend more
time on this request, please contact me to talk about an increase. |

Do you need to obtain images of all German stamps from 1913-1945, or
would a certain number of images (say 50 or 100) spread throughout the
period be sufficient?
More specifically, do you need images of all German stamps depicting
Hitler, or again, would a certain number of them suffice?
Would an answer that referred you to a catalog of German stamps with
images in color be sufficient? (Of course, you'd need an image of the
Israeli stamp too.)

Do you need to obtain images of all German stamps from 1913-1945, or
would a certain number of images (say 50 or 100) spread throughout the
period be sufficient? Yes. I think that would be sufficient, then I
could choose which ones to use. I am looking for stamps that depict
the period in some way.
More specifically, do you need images of all German stamps depicting
Hitler, or again, would a certain number of them suffice? I think a
certain number of them would suffice, because I cannot use all of them
in my project (the ones that you think are the best).
Would an answer that referred you to a catalog of German stamps with
images in color be sufficient? (Of course, you'd need an image of the
Israeli stamp too.) I think this would work if the catalog contained
digital images that I could download somehow for reproduction, and it
covered the years 1913 - 1945.
I hope this information helps. Thankyou for your time.
Sincerely,
Cat66-ga

Hello Cat66,
I've found some links to various collections of German/Hitler stamps
in the time period you require. The first link that I give to you
will probably be of most use to you. It has a whole section on
Propaganda Stamps organized into categories such as, "Sports," "Adolf
Hitler," "Youth," etc. It's a pretty interesting collection. In
addition to that site, I've listed a few others which may help you as
well. In order to get these images over to Kinkos, just right-click
(PC) on the image, click "save picture as," and just bring a disc into
Kinkos. They can blow it up from there.
As far as the links go, just copy and paste the link into your browser
address bar.
I used Google Images to do the majority of my search. I used search
terms such as, "German Stamps," "Hitler Stamps," "wwII stamps german,"
etc.
Good luck with the Thesis!
Allison

OK- now I'm a bit worried. I am definately unable to access the first
two web sites, and need to complete my project. Can you please help
me? I sent the following via email last night from a friend's account
(skyout@bellsouth.net), but have received no reply.

Hello again, Cat,
Unfortunately, it seems that the site is down. I've e-mailed the
webmaster of the domain, but who knows if that will get through.
However, if you surf on over to www.google.com and click on "images"
then type, "Hitler Stamps," into the search field, you will get many
pictures of the stamps from that site. Underneath the various results
you will see, click on the, "show me more results for skalman.nu."
This will show you all of the results that google has stored from this
site. So, in summary, the site is no longer there, nice and organized
and such, but, a good deal of the images from that site are still
available.
When you see one you want, right click on it, and save it. Kinkos
will be able to blow it up from there (or a friend with some Photoshop
experience).
I'll continue to look to see if the site has been moved somewhere.
Good luck,
Allison

Thanks, I really appreciate your help. As you've probably guessed,
I'm a tad panicked. Unfortunately, I'm not going to have time to work
on this until after the 10th when I've graded all my student's final
portfolios, etc. Will I still be able to access the information?
Sincerely,

Hi Cat,
Yeah, you shouldn't have any problem accessing the stuff still on
Google...as long as they don't take it down. However, to be safe, I'd
access the google pages, like I mentioned above, so that way, they are
in your computer's cache. Then, if for some reason they do come down,
you can still get the cached images.
You could also print them out now, and Kinkos could scan/blow them up.
I'm upset that the site I originally referenced is down. I'll keep
looking into it and I'll respond if I find anything.

Dear Allison:
Thanks for all your help. In hind site, I should have waited until I
was absolutely ready to work on the images before posting the
question. But....
Anyhow, I certainly appreciate your diligence in the matter. Thanks
so much.

Hello Cat,
I hope your project went well. It seems that the sites that I
referred to are up and working again...I know it's been several
months. Unfortunately, it seemed that the sites were down right when
you needed them.
As far as the pictures on the site not being, "digital," well, I must
have misunderstood what you meant by that. Any picture on the web is
"digital". You can save the picture, bring it into a program like
Photoshop, and do anything you want to it, ie, enlarge, enhance,
print, etc. Maybe kinkos was charging you to enlarge the digital
picture?
Anyway, I hope all went well and, if you weren't able to view those
two site that you mentioned earlier, you should really check them out
as they are very interesting.

Dear Allison,
Today I met with the IT person at the University of Miami, and he
explained how I need to be working with the images. My final project
is due on April 18th, so I think everything will work out fine
(Crossing my fingers). I sure appreciate all your help and concern.
I've been a little crazy in getting this done, so.....
Thanks so much, and I'll be accessing those images tonight!
