Hello stevelm1:

Thanks for the question. :-)

While several schools in Washington State offer a Masters degree in
Computer Science, only the following two offer a PhD degree in
Computer Science.

Washington State University:
http://www.eecs.wsu.edu/graduate/programs/doctorCS.html

University of Washington:
http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/grad-brochure/

I found this information by first finding out all the universities and
colleges in Washington State. This information can be found at:

Links to Washington State Colleges and Universities
http://www.hecb.wa.gov/links/col-links.html

Private Colleges and Universities
http://access.wa.gov/education/awprivcol.asp

I then visited the websites of each institution to determine whether
they offered a PhD in CS.

I also did some additional searching on the Web to make sure I didn't
miss anything.

Another resource that might be of interest you, while it may be a
little out of date (1993), is:

Rank Ph.D. Programs in Computer Science
http://www.cra.org/statistics/nrcstudy2/rankcs.html

I hope this information is of help to you.

I was hoping for a list of the Universities/Institutions that offer
on-line degree programs as well (unless there are none?). I already
knew about the state schools.

Hi stevelm1:

Thanks for the clarification request.

I was pretty certain that when I did my previous sweep of all the
schools in Washington State that I would have caught any online PhD
programs as well.

Just to make sure, I went through them again and none of the ones in
the link lists mentioned above have an online CS PhD program. In
addition, I went through the following list:

Institutions Offering Online Computer Science Courses
http://www.coursepal.com/degrees/computer-science-degrees-online.htm

and checked every university to see whether it was located in
Washington State. The only three that are in WA are:

* Central Washington University
* Univeristy of Washington
* Washington State University

and *none* of these offer a completely online PhD program.

I did some further searching and surfing for online PhDs in CS in
general, but also found nothing for Washington state.

Some other listings of available online degrees include:

http://elearners.com/cj/?AID=1643131&PID=827107

http://www.learningstart.com/computers.html

A discussion of whether such programs exist can be found at:

http://www.commerce.uq.edu.au/isworld/teaching/msg.18-02-2000.html

From all my research, it appears that most online courses require you
to be "on site" at least for some period of time, so anything out of
state may be of little use to you.

If I am still missing the mark and you are willing to travel to other
states (even just occasionally/temporarily) to meet the criteria of an
"online" PhD program, please let me know how far you'd be willing to
travel and I'll look in the appropriate states for you.
