mireille157,
I was not sure if you wanted a program or an online dictionary, so I
have included several of each. I have started with the online
dictionaries. Since I do not have a dictionary installed on my
computer, I actually keep the first site I have listed,
wordreference.com, open in a browser while I work in Word. It has
served me very well, and it is free! However, I can see where you may
prefer an installed application, especially if your ISP goes out.
Free online dictionaries:
My favorite online French/English(And others), English/French online
dictionary

Another online French/English English/French dictionary:

And two more:

An online French only dictionary

A free downloadable shareware French (and 41 other
languages)dictionary:

This online French/English dictionary also has a free trial
downloadable version. It costs $10(USD) to buy.

Free trial version, $18.00(USD) to buy

Another free trial only:

This Microsoft site has a free downloadable French dictionary to be
used with Microsoft Reader.

Thank you for your prompt response. I was not specific in that I am
not only looking for a dictionnary that I can download from the
Internet, free, but I'm mostly looking for a French spellcheck
software that will work simultaneously with word 97 in Windows XP. I
would like to be able to have an active spellcheck software that will
work the same way the English spellcheck works in Word 97. I now
understand that a spellcheck software and a dictionnary work in
different ways. I have purchases what is called "Correcteur 101"
which is made in Quebec. However, the software is totally independent
from a text during writing. It has to be downloaded later. I need
something that will work while I'm writing and will notify me of any
errors or typos immediately. Thanks again for your assistance.

mireille157,
I found the site that sells Correcteu ($139) USD, and it clearly
states it works with Word 97. Since this appears to be what you want,
and you already own it, I am curious as to what exactly is the problem
you are having? Their site says their program works within Word, or as
a separate application: the user has access to Correcteur 101 Pro at
all times, in different ways: by using the Symbiosis toolbar, by using
the system menu or by using the contextual menu Did you get a
Correcteur toolbar installed on your Word program? (In Pre-Windows
days, I had a Spanish spellchecker for an old program called WordStar.
I never saw evidence that the program existed, but it worked, and
invisibly!
Do you meet these requirements?: Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000;
IBM-compatible PC with Pentium processor; CD-ROM; 16 MB RAM; and 10 to
20 MB available hard disk space. You mention you have Windows XP. Is
it possible it is not compatible with XP? Have you already tried this
companys web site for troubleshooting? Here is their contact

I found nothing free, but am including these programs, all for
$50(USD) or less:

You MAY be able to follow these steps and make your XP perform the
spellcheck in French!
This is from the Microsoft Product Services Support Page:
Install the French Spelling and Grammar Tools or Spanish Spelling and
Grammar Tools
The following steps describe how to install the French and Spanish
spelling and grammar tools that are included in the English version of
Office XP.
By default, the French and Spanish proofing tools are set to the
Installed on First Use installation state. The first time that you
perform a spelling check in these languages, you are prompted to
install the tools. Click Yes on the message, and then insert your
Office XP CD into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive when you are
prompted.
Or you can install the proofing tools by using Add or Remove Programs
in Control Panel. To do this, follow these steps:
NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the
following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see
your product documentation to complete these steps.
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Click Microsoft Office XP, and then click Change.
4. Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.
5. In the Features to install list, click the plus sign next to Office
Shared Features to expand the branch.
6. Click the plus sign next to Proofing Tools to expand the branch.
7. Click the down arrow next to French or Spanish, click Run from My
Computer, and then click Update.
8. Insert your Office XP CD into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive
when you are prompted, and then click OK.
9. Click OK when Setup is complete.

I am hoping the steps directly above will help. Ideally they will
work, and/or you can get some technical help with the program you
already have. Perhaps it needs to be re-installed a bit differently.
Try writing or calling the company. Since you have already spent so
much, it would be fantastic to get it working properly!!

I am looking for a FRENCH spellcheck software that I can download,
free, from the Internet. The same type of software that we all use in
Word 97, in English. I purchased a software for over C$200.00 and it
doesen't do the job. I would like to be able to have a spellcheck
software that will work while I write in Word 97.

mireille157,
I am sorry, but puzzled why you are not happy with any of the sources
I sent you. Your first question stated "free French dictionary that I
can download from the Internet to Windows XP? " This I provided. Then
you clarified "I was not specific in that I am not only looking for a
dictionnary that I can download from the Internet, free, but I'm
mostly looking for a French spellcheck
software that will work simultaneously with word 97 in Windows XP".
This I also provided. Each of the SpellCheck links I provided ARE in
French.
The Microsoft Proofing Tools directions, which I provided to you,
sounds like an idea worth checking into--- it IS in French. It appears
that this is what you are refering to when you say "The same type of
software that we all use in Word 97, in English."...except in French.
It is on your Windows XP CD.
Once a question is rated, it is generally considered closed.Had you
asked for another answer clarification, I could have made yet another
attempt to locate even more SpellCheckers, although I did a thorough
search and provided you with all I found. I still think the expensive
program you already purchased should do the trick. Perhaps you can
call or e-mail their tech support and get it working properly.
Regards,
