Question ID: 102294
I recently had Kazaa working behind my university firewall when it
should have been blocked. The port number was set to 25. All was going
well for a few weeks until suddenly the application kept crashing a
few minutes after starting it with a "cannot read from memory" error.
Up until before the crash the application would successfully connect
and begin downloading queued files at full T1 speed. I decided to
repair Kazaa to fix this problem and consequently now I can't get the
thing to connect at all! I've input all the details I had previously
(I think) but it just refuses to connect. Can I reproduce the
configuration I had before (perhaps there was more to it), or was it a
fluke? Payouts only for successful connection made using Kazaa on my
machine - I will supply as much information as you require.

Thanks!

Yes I had considered this, however the information systems department
is closed over the weekend and this mysteriously happened at 2am on a
saturday morning so I've ruled this out.

theta-ga... no go with antifirewall, i'm still working through your
other options. I'll post the result of all of them on here soon! (no
luck as yet though)

Hi theta-ga…

1.	I tried scanning for a virus – there didn’t seem to be any found on
the machine.
2.	I’m using windows 2000 which doesn’t incorporate a “roll-back”
facility so I don’t have the option of doing this.
3.	I thoroughly reinstalled Kazaa, initially only choosing the
“repair” option, but after this caused the failure to connect I
cleaned it out totally and reinstalled from scratch – no luck.
4.	I already tried KazaaLite as an alternative to Kazaa, unfortunately
it doesn’t seem to work either.
5.	HTTPtunnel won’t allow me to connect to Kazaa either (to the best
of my ability anyhow – my original question on here was actually how
to configure such programs to allow me to tunnel through – search back
for questions from me along the lines of “getting kazaa to work behind
a college firewall” and you’ll probably find it).
6.	I’m running a laptop with Windows 2000 installed, using the college
network where the ports are bound to the network card. I don’t
actually know how they’re blocking the ports, but I do know that they
publicise the fact that file sharing utilities cannot be used, as well
as IRC and MsnMessenger. The last two have however, been recently
allowed for use as they don’t require such high bandwidth. After
asking the admins, there is no possibility that file sharing apps will
be allowed in the future.

KazaaHTTP 2.0 – error appears under errors: 403 forbidden, after
inputting my university proxy address and port number. Tired various
other public proxies and none of them seemed to connect Kazaa; no
errors given.
AdAware – no ads found – I run this anyway.
Loophole – I don’t have an external computer which is constantly
connected to the net at a decent speed to use to bypass the firewall.
WebAttack – too many options to choose from. Can you suggest any
particular ones?

noggywoggy,

It's just a thought, but have you considered that your university's
sysadmin may have taken steps to further block Kazaa use behind the
firewall? Your accesses were almost certainly showing up on a report
somewhere.

Hola,

Not much of Computer geek here cant figure out how to put an
answer in.
I have no idea why your computer got all Jacked up. But
i do have a solution. 2 fold. Uninstall Kazaa and got to
KAZAALITE.COM. Download it and follow the instructions. This will give
you all the P2P cababilities without the HTML/POP-UPS and Spyware. We
use it on the coporate computers at work. No as for getting around the
firewall. Use a program like like SOCKS2HTTP to redirect the Request
to your HTTP Port. The Admins can t block this port or all internet
traffic is blocked. Any more questions feel free to Email. Just be
warned they can still check port usage, and there are other ways of
blocking. They could deny the IP of the Public HTTP Gateway through
the firewall. In that case you'll need to set up a new gateway... Hey
if this works how do i get my 20 bucks.... :)

noggywoggy-ga , I am posting my answer as a comment. If my answer
helps you, please inform me, and I will post it as the official
answer.
===============================================================
Well, from the information you have provided, I would venture the
following reasons for the problem you are experiencing :

REASON 1 : A Virus
========
The "cannot read from memory" message may indicate a
virus. Please scan your computer with an antivirus, using the latest
available virus definitions.
The W32.Supova.Worm is designed to propagate through the
KaZaa peer-to-peer file-sharing network posing as a popular software
file. This worm, when run displays the message
"Application attempted to read memory at 0xFFFFFFFFh
        Terminating application"
For more information on it and instructions to remove it, please see :
         McAfee AVERT - W32.Supova.Worm

         Symantec Security Response - W32.Supova.Worm
         (securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.supova.worm.html)

REASON 2 : Incorrect or Garbled KaZaa Settings
       METHOD 1 : SYSTEM RESTORE
If your KaZaa settings were unintentionally modified and you want to
restore them, you can use the System Restore feature, available only
to the users of Win Me/XP.
     To use System Restore:
     1. WinME : Click Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System
Restore
        WinXP : Click Start>All Programs>Accessories>System
Tools>System Restore
     2. Choose a restore Date from the calender feature and click Next
You should restore your system to a date when your KaZaa
was working properly.Remember that this restore will affect ALL the
programs installed on your comp., not only Kazaa. If KaZaa starts
working, Great! If not, try METHOD 2 or check out REASON 3.
Indiana Univ. KB : Restore my computer to a previous
configuration?

   METHOD 2 : Manual ReInstall
The only way to deal with this is to uninstall Kazaa, Clean
up your computer and then Reinstall entering the original settings.
           STEP 1 : Uninstall KaZaa
                   Goto Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove
Programs
Select Kazaa from the programs list shown and
remove it.
                   Restart your comp.
STEP 2 : Clean Up your Comp
Download AdAware from the LavaSoft website.Install
and run it.Use it to remove all the spyware/adware you find.Restart
your comp.
LavaSoft : Download AdAware 5.8 [Free]
                   Mike's AdAware Tips
After installing AdAware, make sure you also download and install the
latest reference file. After that, use AdAware to scan your memory,
registry and fixed disks. If it finds any spy/ad-ware items, first
back them up (using the backup option) and then remove them.
Just to be sure that you have got all the
intruders, dowload and install SpyBot. It catches some programs that
are still not detected by AdAware.
            SpyBot - Search & Destroy
            (http://beam.to/spybotsd)
Restart your computer once scanning is finished.
STEP 3 : Install KaZaa Lite
After going through all the trouble to cleanup your
comp., we are certainly not going to undo all the good work by
installing KaZaa again. Instead, download and install KazaaLite 2,
which is just Kazaa 2, but with all the adware/spyware removed.
                  Kazaalite.com : Spyware-ad FREE filesharing
                  ( http://www.kazaalite.com/)
Follow the given instructions to install KaZaaLite
2.
After the installation, run the prog. You will notice that it has the
same interface as Kazaa. You can now enter your original kazaa
settings.

REASON 3 : Blocked by a firewall.
If you have checked out REASONs 1 & 2, and the solutions did
not help, then it is very likely that your network admin may have
blocked KaZaa.
The purpose of a firewall is to prevent unwanted users from
having access to machines within a intranet. At the same time they
allow people in the intranet to access the internet. Unfortunately due
to the way some firewalls are setup, they only allow certain
applications work.So if your network block Kazaa, you could try using
the following proxy servers to access the Kazaa network.
         1. HTTP-Tunnel - Information
The page contains links to instructions to make the
product work with KazaaLite. The low bandwidth(1.5 kbps) version is
free, but with Kazaa you will probably need the paid High bandwidth
service.
         2. KazaaHttp - Kazaa using standard http proxy
            (http://www.iprisma.com/kazaahttp/)
This program is specially designed to allow Kazaa users
behind a firewall easy access to the Kazaa network. Free trial for 20
days, $25 to buy.
         3. LoopHole Software
            ( http://www.loopholesoftware.com/)
Loophole uses HTTP tunneling to avoid filtering by the
firewall or web filter.Free trial.See the FAQ for instructions for
configuring Kazaa.
         4. WebAttack.Com : Proxy Server
            ( http://www.webattack.com/Freeware/network/fwproxy.shtml
)
Choose from a variety of free SOCKS4/5/HTTP proxy servers.
         5. Astalavista Free Proxy Servers List
            ( www.astalavista.com/privacy/library/proxy/proxyserver.shtml
)

Before you try out the above products, you should make sure that your
network is actually banning traffic to/from Kazaa. Try asking your
admin.
=======================================================================
If all the above solutions fail to work, it would help if you could
provide more detail. Also check out the related links given below.
Give info on :
  - your computer config
  - Operating System
  - version of Kazaa you are using
  - Exact error message shown by Kazaa
  - Result of Antivirus software scan
