Hello Niggon,
Thanks for your question.
The most authoritative report that exists on this subject is put out
by a company called Interactive Media in Retail Group(www.imrg.org).
There were basically no statistics of this kind before they started
their index in April of 2000. Therefore, we only have one meaningful
year of comparison. You can find a direct link to the report here:
Tracking online sales
http://www.imrg.org/IMRGindexSept2002.pdf
Here are the comparisons:
Online Sales in millions of pounds
October 2000
172
October 2001
422
Change = 145 percent
November 2000
215
November 2001
509
Change = 137 percent
December 2000
526
December 2001
230
Change = 127 percent
The average change between 2000 and 2001 seems to be a growth of about
137 percent. This year, the trend seems to be continuing with all of
the months demonstrating at least a 100 percent growth rate. I am
sure by that sometime in January they will have the statistics up for
this holiday season so you may want to check their website around that
time. Overall, it seems that holiday spending will probably continue
to rise at this rate for some time, with more and more people getting
online every year. The Internet is really maturing as a retailing
medium in the UK, and it can only get better from here. I hope this
helps.
