Question ID: 102553
I accidentally deleted the file:

       C:\PROGRA~1\MCAFEE\MCAFEE~1\MCAFEE~1\QLOAD.386

It was part of my original Windows 98 SE that was installed on my HP
Computer. Without the file, when I boot up Windows, it hesitates, says
the file is missing and to "hit any key" to continue. How do I get
another copy of the file?

This is a McAfee or Symantec/Norton file. Are you interested in
getting the program the file is associated with working correctly (I'm
making an educated guess here that it is either System Works or Nuts
and Bolts) or do you just want the annoying error message to go away?
Also, does your computer boot up after you "hit any key" or does the
GUI (Graphical User Interface) fail to load?

brianzapel-ga,

Do you still have the original installation CD-ROM?

The file originally came as part of the software that was already
installed on my computer when I bought it. I tried reinsalling the
McAfee software that is on the HP "Application Recovery" CD that came
with the computer but it did not put the file back.

My computer does boot up after I "Hit any key"

I don't need the McAfee Virus Protection because I prefer and use
Norton Anti Virus.

I would like to get rid of the "Hit any key" message so the computer
just boots up normally without the extra step of "Hitting any key".

The file is not in the recycle bin.

How would I edit the registry? i've never done it.

Hi,
If you recently deleted and the file is still in Recycle bin,
restore from the recyle bin.

If file is not in recycle bin, the easy way to restore is by
reinstalling the MCAFEE agin in your PC.

Hope it helps.

If you can't or don't want to reinstall the program you can edit your
registry and remove all files that refer to McAfee.I assume you know
how to use regedit.Make sure you back up your registry before making
any changes

you might try loading your windows/system.ini file into notepad and
doing a quick search for an entry that lists
"C:\PROGRA~1\MCAFEE\MCAFEE~1\MCAFEE~1\QLOAD.386". Most likely, if you
remove that entry (or comment it out), you will not get the error
message any longer.
