When I load Outlook I get a message "Unable to install or load
C:\windows\system\avgxch32.dll" and then a similar message for
"CasWOLEx.dll". The programme works but I suspect that it is not
protected by AVG.I went to their website and as I had upgraded to XP I
did as they suggested and reinstalled AVG6 free edition.

When you uninstall AVG6, do the errors go away completely?

I didn't try to run without my AVG installed as I am permanently
connected by cable modem and thought that I should be without
protection for as little time as poossible.
I use Outlook Express instead, which has an AVG plug-in.
