Question ID: 102614
how can i convert my AOL Filing Cabinet to open-format files, without
having to do it by hand? i.e., where is a filter that can convert the
email folders in the Filing Cabinet to text email files, and
(especially) that can convert the Favorite Places to an HTML bookmarks
file? i imagine that AOL considers the format proprietary,or at least
private, it keeps users from migrating from their service.but i think
that file formats are not considered the private property of the
companies that make them, because there are opensourcetools that
handle such files (opensource suites that handle Officefiles, for
example). so probably we are talking about a hacked file format, and
atool that uses such a format.i am not talking about hacking someone
else's Filing Cabinet, i knowmy ownpassword. and, an AOL Filing
Cabinet file format would be interestingbut i would still like a tool.
 i am currently using AOL 7.0 and 8.0(on MS-Windows platforms) but i
also have older AOL versions on oldhard drives that i would also like
to convert the Filing Cabinetsfrom. i can do the filtering on Linux
if necessary.multiple references preferred as i only found one tool (i
forgotwhere) andit didn't work as advertised.thankszblbt

Have you tried this tool?

http://www.aoleave.com/mailbox.html

the aoleave tools have not been tested past AOL 5.0, and the
aoleave mailbox tool is in alpha test (see more below).

can you tell me what search terms you used to find the link?

www.aoleave.com
this would require me to download the java runtime (5MB) or the
java development kit (20 MB), and run binary java classes from
the command line. he indicates the Address Book tool and
the Favorite Places tool are working. the mailbox tool is in
alpha test. the owner hasn't updated the status since 2/2001.
he indicates AOL 6.0 is a new version (at that time) and that
he hasn't tested against it. i will try it when i have time, and
update this answer with what i find (it may take a few or
       several days).

www.emailman.com (referred to by www.aoleave.com)
this looks like THE source for information about email
in general. comprehensive TOC on the front page.
i have only found one pertinent reference (the one to
Address Magic); i need to look at this site more.

www.connectedsw.com (referred to by www.emailman.com)
home of Address Magic address book converter.
this tool only supports AOL 4.0, 5.0, and 7.0.
and it only converts the address book, not the Favorite
Places or the Mail folders. this product costs $29.95 for
the personal edition; the demo has the following limits:
          1. Only 15 contacts will be copied.
          2. Distribution lists are ignored.

My search terms were:

aol personal filing cabinet convert

There are also some paid services, such as:

http://www.pwcrack.com/pfc.shtml

Are these of any interest to you?

Clarification of Question by zeeblebot-ga on 12 Nov 2002 12:53 PST
i guess not. www.pwcrack.com quoted me $200 as a starting price, not
including complexity of my PFC, output formats, etc. all of their
other services are related to password cracking (if you forgot the
password on a zip file, for example); i don't need cracking because i
know the password. i wouldn't want to pay $200 each to bail everyone
in my family out of AOL, i am looking more for a tool i can share.
re www.aoleave.com, i have downloaded the java JDK and need to run the
aoleave java against my PFCs. aoleave doesn't publish the java code
so i don't know how easy/hard it would be to upgrade his up-to-AOL-5.0
aoleave tool to handle AOL 6/7/8.
