Ok. I am running Windows NT4 SP6. I am developing an Access Database Solution. I use the office XP Packaging Wizard to create the distribution CD. It gives me an option of including systems files or not. If i include system files, when my user tries to install onto his XP pro machine it tells him that the program requires NT4 sp6 or later!!! I thought that XP Pro would come under that heading. If i dont including system files, it tells me that it requires the Office System Pack. When i try to install the System Pack that came on the Office XP CD, Windows XP tells me that it doesnt need to have these files installed and quits out of the setup. I dont want to tell him he needs to install office XP! That kind of defeats me buying the developers kit in the first place! Don't tell me that I have to upgrade to Windows XP Pro inorder to create a database for Windows XP! That isnt the answer I am looking for!!! and as a foot note - what the heck happened to microsofts "two free tech support incidents" thing!!! |

Ouch! I'd borrow a friend's XP Pro machine, install the Office XP developers edition there temporarily, and build the application distribution CD that way. If none of your friends have an XP Pro machine, a daily rental would be my next thought. I assume you have valid reasons for not wanting to leave NT behind. WinXP Pro is pretty nice, I'm running it now on my laptop as we speak, but I have other machines with Win98, NT, and Win2000 available, so I had the luxury of making the leap. I'd post your predicament as a cautionary note to one or more microsoft.public newsgroups, as a service to other developers. The MS gurus lurk there and sometimes speak up if they know a good solution. "Hey, MS gave you two free incidents... Awwww!" regards, mathtalk-ga |

Hi den2002, As I'm still waiting for my answers account to be totally setup, so I can't give you an 'answer' yet... :) According to Microsoft support, one possible reason why it would not work is due to a bug that was fixed in SP-1 for Office XP Dev. I'd try to install the SP and see if that fixes the bug. The knowledge base was not 100% definitive as to if this was your exact problem, but, it certainly won't hurt to try anyways. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305002 There was one other KB article of interest.. Again, not 100% the same as your problem, but, again, might give you a heads up in the right direction. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318981 If these work for you, once my account is fully setup in the next day or two I'd like to post this as the answer. Please let me know if it works! As for your second question about the 'two free support incidents' - well, I've wondered that myself on occassion: but, it seems to me that their policy has been to limit and/or remove support from professional and/or developer software for many years now. NT Pro had 2 support incidents while NT Server had none. Really, the same software: just different registry entries--yet one had support, the other didn't. Hope that helps! Thanks for using Google Answers! Legolas-ga |

Ok. Installed SP1 - still not working. I ended up working around the problem by manually installing the runtimes from the cd my setup had made, and then manually registering OCX files/DLL's that my app needs, and then setting up shortcuts etc.. manually too. What a pain. However, I don't think I am going to be able to resist the XP upgrade for much longer. Not now that most other people are upgrading. Oh well. Thanks for the help anyway. |
