I work behind a corporate firewall and am not able to access any of
the automatic software updates provided by apple for OS X and OS9. I
suspect that this is due to a specific port being blocked by our
firewall or some such network issue, as the error message i get is
unable to connect to the internet, despite the fact that I can connect
to mail or http browsing.
I would like to know either the port that needs to be unblocked or the
procedure that i need to enable this service behind my firewall.

It uses standard HTTP on port 80. Do you need to use a proxy server
for HTTP connections?

the precise error message it gives me is 'unable to connect to the
internet. please check your configuration'. I do need to use a proxy
to connect to HTTP but these settings are present in my software
update setup panel. Im not sure which other configuration i need to
change to fix this. I can browse the net fine through any browser of
choice using http :80 (thorugh port 8080 at my proxy) using my login
name and password. interestingly it does ask me for my login name and
password when i try software update.
do you think there's hope for me yet :)?
