I have about 5,000 MP3 files that I have downloaded from various
sources. Some of them are truncated -- they're cut off, they end
abruptly, before the end of the song. I wish to clean my collection of
these bad files. Is there software that will analyze a collection this
size, which can identify files that it thinks might have this
truncation problem?

Hello,

Could you tell us what platform you are using (Linux, Windows, Mac OS,
etc)? I found some software to do what you want under Unix/Linux,
then decided I'd better find out what OS you run. :)

Thanks,

Hi,

I'm afraid that my searches were not fruitful. I find it hard to
believe that there is no such tool out there for Windows, but I was
unable to find one. The only possibility that I found is PsychicMP3.
Its focus is renaming MP3 files, but the Shareware Connection has the
following to say about it:

"...The Tool displays MP3 type (VBR/CBR/mp3PRO), bitrate and also
includes a structure checker to verify the MP3 files..."
Shareware Connection
http://sharewareconnection.com/play/505000index5.html
(Search for "Hammer" to find the entry for PsychicMP3 -- it's called
CDDB MP3 Tool on this page.)

PsychicMP3's homepage doesn't say anything about checking the
integrity of the files, so I'm not sure whether it still does or not.
Plus, it may not be convenient for a large number of files. I don't
run Windows so I can't download and test the program. Here's its
homepage:

http://www.medic.dk/basic.htm

Additional Links:

Even though you use WinXP, here is the link to the Linux/Unix mp3
checker:

mp3_check
http://mp3check.sourceforge.net/

Here were my Google search terms:

windows OR win mp3 integrity tester OR checker -virus
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=windows+OR+win+mp3+integrity+tester+OR+checker+-virus&btnG=Google+Search

Here are some searches which turned up nothing (since they were
useless, I'm not including the URLs--perhaps someone else can build a
better search and not waste time on these):

"mp3 integrity"
integrity mp3 -lord
"mp3 integrity tester"
mp3 data structure integrity tester OR checker -virus -"sector tester"
mp3 file check OR checker
software test mp3 truncation
software mp3 truncation
software mp3 validator

I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful,
bikerman-ga

http://www.geocities.com/mp3utility/

This will Batch test a directory of files, with the ability to move
corrupted files to a pre-specified directory for further testing. Can
also recursively test files in subdirectories under the top directory
specified. It test an MPEG audio file for synchronization (and other)
errors.
